Updated my #Synology NAS to DSM 7.3 and now the #Netatalk docker container no longer starts 😕

My #GlobalTalk main file share and virtual printer will be offline until I can get this figured out.

This is what the container log spits out:

socket: Address family not supported by protocol
socket: Address family not supported by protocol
atalkd: can't get interfaces, exiting.

The great news is that the blueberry butterfly iBook G3 has survived the travel after 6 months in a box in a container (3 of them blocked due to strikes in Spain) !

I never noticed before that back then the logo on the back was upside down when opened. Feels kinda weird nowadays.

Anyway this looks great for upcoming #Marchintosh and #GlobalTalk in 2026 (or 2027, if you know how I am).

And the second I go control-c and stop tcpdum, it all disappears from the Chooserses again.

#GlobalTalk

Soooo... if I run:

tcpdump -i 1 udp port 387 -vv -X

on the netatalk machines, then suddenly they appear in old Macs' Choosers and everything works with jrouter running.
🤷

The LC has started being a bit unstable being on for long times again... so I've been trying out jrouter a bit more. It seems to be pretty decent, but for some reason my macippi doesn't want to play nicely.

afp over ip, fine
macip sees everything, fine
old macs see *nothing* from macip

Turn off jrouter so there’s no zones at all, and macip + old macs play nicely, no problem.

I'm sure it'll end up being something silly and straight forwardy. Oh, computers.

@europlus @osnews Brilliant. How cool is that! I'll have to give it a go. I’ve got a G4 Mac Mini running Mac OS9 and it sounds like this new ROM will benefit that too. There are a few issues with the current patched one. That's sort of already connected through EtherTalk to #Globaltalk but System 7.5 would be pretty awesome (if networking get's fixed!)
Seems my blueberry clamshell iBook G3 has arrived back home. Due to poor organizing it got tucked with lots of less fragile stuff in a box that traveled in a container for like 6 months.

I hope it’s still alive. I will know for sure next week. Otherwise it’ll be a lovely decoration anyway. It would be a great one to finally join in on the #GlobalTalk fun for next #Marchintosh. This has been in my todo list for like 56 years now.

The hat-o-matic has made its decision!

The pencil and stickers will go to @carola, and stickers will make their way to @vincenzovin7!

Concratulations guy! DM me your details and we’ll get these on their way :D

System 7 natively boots on the Mac Mini G4 Only a few weeks ago, the CHRP variants of Mac OS 7.6 and 8 were discovered and uploaded to the internet for posterity, but we're already seeing the positive results of this event unfold: Mac OS 7.x can now run on the Mac Mini G4 - natively. The very short of it is as follows. First, the CHRP release of Mac OS 8 contains a ROM file that allows Mac O https://www.osnews.com/story/143926/system-7-natively-boots-on-the-mac-mini-g4/ #macOS

#GlobalTalk hive mind…

Which is that “latest AppleShare client that works in Sys 7.1.1 but has lots of improvements", and which Apple software release’s installer is it available in?

I was sure I’d seen a recent post, but I can’t find it in my masto servers database.

Thanks!

I’m looking for this as I’m trying to pull together a heap of base extra installs for v7.1.1 to go on my GlobalTalk setup disk images (see https://hachyderm.io/@chrisgervais/115627546759502560), I can’t find specific installers or have questions about:

Scriptable Finder – is that just past of AppleScript?
Drag Manager – does this bring any benefit?
MacTCP >v1.1.1 – does this bring any benefit, and is there a preferred later version and/or one which doesn’t fill up the AIR log?

I likely won’t add any extra network utilities or browsers.

I’ll provide a list once I’ve done some more setup – that may also spark other suggestions.

@nygl@mastodon.social @europlus@europlus.zone @_the_cloud@mastodon.social @billgoats@bitbang.social does a canonical list of 7.1 extras exist? I usually add things like AppleScript, scriptable Finder, Drag Manager, Thread Manager, MacTCP 2.1, Network Software 1.5.1, but I’m sure I’m missing other stuff.
