Just a 30something Canadian dude from #VancouverIsland who's into #RetroComputing (mainly old #Apple / #Mac stuff), #Programming, and general #Technology enthusiast. Also love to #Travel!

I wrote a Mastodon client for vintage Mac computers, #Macstodon, which you can get from here: https://github.com/smallsco/macstodon

Occasionally I’ll post about #Anime and #Gaming, especially #ZenlessZoneZero and #HonkaiStarRail.

I boost a lot. Boosts are not endorsements.

"Huh why is logging into the server in the room next door so slow" because my eeros rebooted overnight and my laptop roamed onto the other SSID that's VPNed back to the UK and all my packets have been travelling 10,000 miles to go a few metres

Released version 1.6 of my QuickDraw view application.
The most significant change is support for pattern operations.

'Gouldian Finch.

The Gouldian Finch (Chloebia gouldiae), also known as the Gould's Finch or the Rainbow Finch, is a colourful passerine bird that is native to Australia.'

A Pride Bird.

This post reminded me of an anecdote that occurred recently:

A few weeks ago I went to visit my parents, who were babysitting my five-year-old nephew. For some reason he was reciting the powers of two: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32… you get the idea. Anyway, he comes up to me and says “Bet you don’t know which number comes next, uncle Scott!”

So I immediately continued the sequence: 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024… and his jaw dropped open, he couldn’t believe that I knew “how to keep adding each number to itself when they get that big”.

Spoiler: I don’t. It’s just pattern recognition from 30 years of touching computers and seeing powers of two everywhere 😂 https://infosec.exchange/@hacks4pancakes/114809042310356272

Tonight, I'm just sorting through my latest retro downloads... mostly stuff I found on the Internet Archive.

And... "Holy cow!" This must be the earliest version of "Microsoft Office" I've ever seen! "WIN OFFICE 1.00". Everything's on 5.25inch disks and it doesn't even have a combined SETUP.EXE yet. You just pick what you want and then you're being thrown into a full-screen DOS session to go through the setup process. It features "Word 1.1", "Excel 2.0d" and "PowerPoint 2.00". This is fun!.. albeit in a strange way.

#macOS #programming people, I need some help.

I have #Java code that parses a CSV file that was written by Microsoft Excel. It therefore needs to know which character encoding was used.

On Windows, the Java system property “native.encoding” is set to Cp1252, which matches what Excel writes. On my Mac, however, native.encoding=UTF-8, but Excel writes in MacRoman!

TextEdit also assumes CSV files are MacRoman when reading them.

Anybody know how Excel and TextEdit choose their default encoding?

Did you know someone reverse-engineered the Weather Channel computer system from the 80s/90s and now you can generate your own private weather channel for your location?

So it’s just a phone cable chopped in half an a pair of alligator clips attached to each end. Thanks, barbed wire!
@billgoats Does… does this mean that there’s some unsuspecting livestock down the road who is now making 56k modem noises?
@lukito The cows are wandering around so confused 😵‍💫
@billgoats @lukito So they would when they spot a Dogcow.
@billgoats It would be interesting to move the cables from both machines apart further and further and see the maximum distance before the connection is too noisy to work properly!
@arroz It's all tidied away for now, but that's one to potentially try while summer is here!

@billgoats
That's up there with @revk and his "ADSL over wet string" 😄

Edit to add a link to revk's blog article:

It's official, ADSL works over wet string
