I don’t know if Twitter will ultimately implode. I don’t know if Mastodon represents the future of social media. All I know is, I have personally seen a tremendous outpouring of positive energy on @Mastodon this week and that gives me hope. Thank you.

Help me find more #BIPoC Accounts, for me, for you, for everyone on #Mastodon

If you're #black #indigenous or #peopleofcolor feel free to comment, if you like you can comment who you are and/or what you do, so other people can follow you more easily

I will report everyone who dares to comment something hateful or attacks anyone here

Please boost

Hey #introduction time! I’m a professor at #UChicago in #phylogenetics and #biomechanics, interested in #evolution, #conservation, #coralreefs, and #MarineBiology. Looking forward to meeting new and old friends!

Well, here are some #Introduction hashtags for folks to help find. I'm a #Museum #Curator in charge of #Birds, a #Conservation scientist, and #Queer af.

I often post about #Seabirds, #PlasticPollution, #MuseumCollections and my cat Webster.

This feed (hopefully?) echos what TheLabAndField[at]twitter is/was.

Remember to give communities time to sort themselves out. I've been here since 2017 and there's A LOT of new folks around. Patience & kindness.

I migrated here from #science #SciComm #ScienceCommunication #bird #birding #photography Twitter (#TwitterMigration ) in the hope of finding that community again

But somehow I’ve ended up in a space where I’m seeing a ton of content from #history folks (is #historian a hashtag?)

It is weirdly awesome! I studied history in undergrad (my large thesis was on gender presentation in the Late Antiquity/ā€œDark Agesā€), it’s nice to reconnect with my history passion again after all this time!

Super low tide means it's time for one of my favorite weekend activities: #beachcombing #mudlarking

Spot where this 1930s milk of magnesia bottle was hiding in the first pic šŸ‘€

I’ve been really struggling lately, so my poor wife went out of her way to take me on a date to the pumpkin patch (yay!) then decided to make my favorite dinner (a hearty Impossible meatloaf with potatoes)

First I end up grabbing too many ugly pumpkins because I felt bad that they were rotting alone in the pumpkin patch after Halloween

Then she spent ages making meatloaf, only to learn after an hour of ā€œcookingā€ that our oven isn’t working suddenly, so she’s frying it.

I’m very grateful <3

I came here as part of the #TwitterMigration and so far I really like the vibe, so I guess I should make an #Introduction post!

I’m Sarah (they/them), a #biology PhD candidate at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA)! I work with @thecowbirdlab, studying the development of baby #birds, mostly the hormones in eggs that influence their growth!

I’m a #queer #trans person, a #birder #birdnerd who loves #nature #photography (mostly birds though) and #SciComm #ScienceCommunication!

Ten Tiny Mastodon Newbie Cultural Tips 🐘:

In random order šŸ‘‡

1. Add Alt-Text to you pictures! It’s the norm here.

2. Use Content Warnings (CW) generously.

3. BE KIND šŸ’š

4. Respect the work that your instance’s admin(s) do for you. Support them financially if you can, this is volunteer work there are no ads here.

5. Read the Code of Conduct and Server Rules for your instance. These are different between instances. You usually can find this information by adding ā€œ/aboutā€ or ā€œ/about/moreā€ after your instance’s website address (which is the same as your instance’s name).

6. Do exchange genuinely with people. Interact!

7. Add genuine info to your profile’s bio.

8. It’s not the best to only use your account here to automatically forward all of your tweets without ever interacting. We are here to be here. This is not an advertising platform, and people might unfollow or mute you for this.

9. Many features that are not like on Twitter have been left out deliberately for a good reason. Respect that. Listen to the Mastodon elders.

10. This is NOT Twitter. It is MUCH better! 🐘✨

BE KIND! HAVE FUN! BE GENUINE! MAKE FRIENDS! ā€‹

Facebook memories reminded me that six years ago today I was going door-to-door in Iowa. I was volunteering for the Democrats in Kansas at the time, but we knew we could make a bigger difference in Iowa

I was filled with so much hope then

I wasn’t totally optimistic, days before the election. Campaigning in Kansas/Iowa, listening to voters, I was more scared than the polls suggested I should be

I watched the results that night, learned my neighbors had voted against us, and wept and wept
