Hoping to connect over here with #evolution #biodiversity and #biomechanics folks! Will aim to post and support others. Here is a cool surgeonfish (Ctenochaetus) we dissected recently.

Here’s an older piece called “Goosefish with a Kindle”.

Wow, we're up to 438 followers in just a day and a half! Looks like the migration is well underway. Let's celebrate that with a haddock from "The Habits and Migrations of Some of the Marine Fishes of Massachusetts" (AmNat, 1870). https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/epdf/10.1086/270637

Intro post: PhyloPic is a website by @keesey with thousands of organism silhouettes available under Creative Commons licenses. Everything is taxonomically indexed, so you can find related species, or search all silhouettes within a clade. And anyone can submit silhouettes through the Contribution Website! Have a look at the beta version of PhyloPic 2.0: https://beta.phylopic.org

Ten Tiny Mastodon Newbie Cultural Tips 🐘:

In random order 👇

1. Add Alt-Text to you pictures! It’s the norm here.

2. Use Content Warnings (CW) generously.

3. BE KIND 💚

4. Respect the work that your instance’s admin(s) do for you. Support them financially if you can, this is volunteer work there are no ads here.

5. Read the Code of Conduct and Server Rules for your instance. These are different between instances. You usually can find this information by adding “/about” or “/about/more” after your instance’s website address (which is the same as your instance’s name).

6. Do exchange genuinely with people. Interact!

7. Add genuine info to your profile’s bio.

8. It’s not the best to only use your account here to automatically forward all of your tweets without ever interacting. We are here to be here. This is not an advertising platform, and people might unfollow or mute you for this.

9. Many features that are not like on Twitter have been left out deliberately for a good reason. Respect that. Listen to the Mastodon elders.

10. This is NOT Twitter. It is MUCH better! 🐘✨

BE KIND! HAVE FUN! BE GENUINE! MAKE FRIENDS!

Hey #introduction time! I’m a professor at #UChicago in #phylogenetics and #biomechanics, interested in #evolution, #conservation, #coralreefs, and #MarineBiology. Looking forward to meeting new and old friends!
