Boxing Day beachcombing finds. 😊
When I get too glum and morose, a brisk 10-kilometer jaunt by the North Sea will fix me right up.
Beachcombing, listening to the roar of breaking waves, a tempestuous gale whistling around my ears, watering eyes, and the irksome recurring drop of snot under the tip of my nose....
It clears the cobwebs right out.
#Beach gooseneck #barnacles find.
There's 3 different types of barnacles found in BC waters/on beaches - acorn, gooseneck & whale - the latter grows on whales' bodies. Barnacles are a longtime, year-round staple #seafood for coastal #Indigenous #FirstNations. In particular, the #Haida & #Kwakwakawakw & #Pacheedaht #FirstPeoples have several documented stories involving barnacles, including food prep recorded histories.
Barnacles are #ancient and can be dated to the middle of Cambrian period of Paleozoic because of Burgess Shale deposits in #BritishColumbia. They're #hermaphroditic #MarineAnimals.

"She just brought it to the front desk and said I have rescued this sea snake."
"A New South Wales wildlife sanctuary has been forced to temporarily evacuate parts of its centre after a woman brought in a highly venomous sea snake. They are one of the most venomous snakes in the world."

Beachcast shells on Ardeer Beach, with Ailsa Craig and Arran just visible in the background, from this morning's dogwalk.

I took the dog down to Ardeer beach on the Clyde Coast yesterday and in amongst the seaweed, jellyfish and the occasional Portuguese Man-o-War(!) cast up on the shore, I found this. Who knew the inside of a crab's shell could quite such a vivid purple!
