Ten simple rules for fostering creativity in research labs

Research lab groups are hotspots for the education of the next generation of scientists, and making these units work as creatively as possible is essential for solving pressing issues in biology, the environment, and beyond. This article highlights 10 points that can help make labs as creative as possible. Several of these points are about setting up a creative lab culture; others are about fostering group-level creative output, some are more about encouraging creativity of individual team members, or both. While the head of a research group, the principal investigator, plays an important role, this can only be successful in healthy labs where everyone contributes.

I finally saw a majestic male mandarin duck at Golden Acre Park in Leeds today after being on the lookout of them for years! It may be an introduced species in the UK, but what a beauty it is!

Arrrgh I spent a while this afternoon crafting a paragraph of a discussion/perspectives section in my thesis and then, at the end, went back to one of my results figures to link it to my observations. This made me discover a *fatal flaw* in my hypothesis, so I had to delete the whole paragraph.

I was lured down this rabbit hole by my #CellBiology kryptonite: a paper about phosphoinositide signalling at lysosomes featuring awesome CLEM imaging 🤦‍♀️ #PhDeath #thesiswriting #academicchatter

Microscopy is definitely a highlight of my work, especially getting to image my favourite cell organelles, that I had only seen in textbooks or other people’s papers prior to my PhD! I could watch endosomal tubules throwing shapes or vesicles zooming around all day, but usually have to keep acquiring images to get those ‘n’ numbers up!

The FocalPlane ‘how to’ posts are also a great source of technical tips! 🔬❤️

Omg I am loving today’s Google Doodle! Might order some Scoubisous string to make 3D depictions of the plasmids I made - the helical styles were my favourite to make in their 00s heyday 🧬 Will have to wait till I submit my thesis…don’t need any more ways to procrastinate now 😅

Happy to see my first-author preprint online 🎉 It’s been a fun challenge to find ways to distinguish different Intracellular Nanovesicle Identities in cells - ATG9-flavour INVs are only the first we’ve characterised! It was exciting to show that INVs function on a degradative trafficking pathway - macroautophagy - and the ATG9A lipid-scrambling capacity of these vesicles may be important in other membrane-remodelling contexts 🤔 Lots still to explore!

We noticed a key autophagy protein ATG9A in our proteome and got curious about the relationship between the previously described ATG9 vesicles and INVs. Through in-cell vesicle capture assays, we showed that ATG9 vesicles make up one subtype of INVs.
