New paper shows heat pumps suitable for all European countries - even cold ones!

Research out today by myself, @janrosenow and @richardlowes at @RegulatoryAssistanceProject with Neil Hewitt.

We collected real-world data across 3 continents. 🧵

We're out with a new paper today that explores approaches and policy measures to ensure buildings are ‘low flow temperature ready.’ Co-authored by @semoxenaar and @louisesunderland, this was a great collaboration with iFeu.

Lowering flow temperatures is key in the switch to efficient clean heat

Two important factors are advancing the shift to clean heating in Europe: First, the fossil gas crisis underscored the value of saving energy and the Lowering flow temperatures in heating systems is key for saving energy and integrating various clean heat resources into the heating mix.

Millions of households 🏘️ in the EU rely on district heating systems for heating ☃️ and hot water 🚿

To give all households access to clean heat and meet climate targets we need to accelerate decarbonisation while at the same time expanding the sector

The size and scope of this challenge varies hugely between regions and systems, but with a cohesive approach combining district heating decarbonisation, building renovation, and regulatory reform this can be done!

Foresight | How clean is Europe’s district heating?

Much of Europe’s district heating sector has been around for decades. But a lack of investment and cohesive thinking since then means many systems are lagging behind on their decarbonisation pathways, says Sem Oxenaar from the Regulatory Assistance Project

District heating can be a key part of the building 🌆decarbonisation puzzle

There is a huge potential of clean excess, ambient, and renewable heat that is going unused.

I went to Paris-Saclay to see for myself

What did I learn?:

Foresight | District heating can support Europe’s decarbonisation efforts

Two Parisian networks illustrate the old versus the new when it comes to district heating systems. Installing the next generation of district heating networks, while upgrading existing infrastructure, will accelerate the energy transition, says Sem Oxenaar from the Regulatory Assistance Project

#citizen 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 action in the energy transition is booming in #Europe.

Thousands of new initiatives, strong focus on

There is a silent transition going on in Dutch 🏠

Over the past decade the share of electric stoves has risen to 85% of new sales

People are open to change, once they have gotten over the initial hurdle & the alternatives are good

HOT OFF THE PRESS: Dutch heat pump market expands by 57% in 2022 with 110,000 installs.

This is remarkable in a country where 92% of households use fossil gas for heating, making it the country in Europe with the highest share of gas-connected homes.

110,000 new heat pumps installed in 2022 in the Netherlands

With 70,000 heat pumps installed in new buildings and around 40,000 in existing homes in 2022, the Dutch heat pump market experienced a 57% growth compared to 2021. Data released by the Dutch Heat Pump Association, shows that the number of heat pumps installed in the Netherlands skyrocketed in 2022, after steadily growing for years. Central heating boilers will be banned from 2026 […]

🛑 @EP_Industry just agreed on their EPBD position.

Some good points there, but… a very worrying provision supporting fossil heating has been added in the last minute.
