Iâve been struggling to find the right word.
Hundreds of thousands of people are taking to the streets to oppose OrbĂĄnâs rule in Hungary, the âdisappearanceâ and detention of Palestinian activists in the US, corruption in Serbia, narcissistic kleptocracy at T*sla dealerships. Masses of people making flesh the knowledge that being polite and hoping for the best and trusting in the system correcting itself has demonstrably not worked, and if anything has made things worse.
Hundreds of thousands of people are taking a risk together with their friends and families and hundreds of thousands of strangers, knowing they are playing catch-up to decades of damage wrought by malignant powers and apathy.
People are (literally) manifesting strength and justice, connected globally through their own specificity. At its core this moment is tangible and real: itâs sweat and stress and bottled water and burner phones and clip boards and new friends and old banners and someoneâs first protest and someone elseâs twentieth.
What do you call that? âUpliftingâ is the wrong word. âInspirationalâ is the wrong word. Itâs true, but itâs also all too twee and reductive. Even âhistoricâ is the wrong word. Necessary? Promising? Present?
