Tempered Heart

The temptation of that spirit of distrust
Is an enemy to defeat and we must

For it always comes when times are dark
To place an attack upon your aching heart

But God is not a man that He should lie…
For He’s made precious promises to you and I

Promises that He has spoken
Promises that He’s never broken

Promises He has kept
Even as we wept

So whenever distrust tries building a home in your head…
Lift your eyes unto those blessed hills instead

For under the shadow of the Almighty you will find
An abiding peace for your heart and mind.

Crank call from a candle factory —
A triple-threat candelabra.
Introduced themselves as Sasquatch,
With a vendetta against my Chupacabra.

My wife hyperventilated —
the hundredth call that week,
each one crazier than the last.
Ignore it, I said — turn the other slashed cheek.

Heavy breathing, then pizza orders,
Giggling voices asking for directions.
We changed the number, blew the whistle,
And left the rest to the Department of Deflections.

playing god

and here we are creating worlds
& those who live in them;
blurry at the edges but
with exact sharpness of thought and
being;
a synecdoche of self and all,
a raw clay figure
in the shape of a man
with everything & nothing projected
in its head –
here we are, forming,
shaping, tearing down and
finally, with no more tears in our eyes,
introducing a world to the world

The English poet Roger McGough sends readers’ eyes travelling to and fro the way a tennis ball would across a net when they read 40-Love. Indeed, the poem itself – like the “middle aged couple” he writes about – is split by such a ‘net.’

Εκεί που πας δεν ενοχλείς
Εκεί δεν περισσεύεις
Τα αριστεία εκεί μπορείς
στον κόσμο να εκθέτεις
Εκεί δεν σε συκοφαντούν
το «κάτι» σου να κλέψουν
Να λάμψουν τα μπακίρια τους
για λίγο κι από έξω
Η όψη, οσαν Εγκέλαδος,
εκεί δεν τους ταράζει
Κι εσύ σκληρός και λεύτερος
πίσω, πια δεν κοιτάζεις
Στηρίγματα αδυνατούν
να σε υποστηρίξουν
Το χάδι τους γαργαλητό
Φαγούρα το φιλί τους
Εκεί όλους τους συμπονάς
κανέναν δεν κδικιεσαι
Η Αγάπη γίνεται αγκαλιά
π’ όλοι τους είναι μέσα
