"One eye in the water." ~my selfies behind few years time.

Kalevala: In Finnish folk belief, water was strongly associated with the realm of the dead. The deceased were thought to cross over water or dwell in a world of the dead located beyond it, and many omens related to death were connected with water, lakes, and rivers. In addition, a dying person was often described as having a changed gaze or eyes that had become "watery." Because of these traditions, an expression referring to an eye being "in the waters" may, in some local stories or family traditions, have acquired connotations of death, even though this is not its standard dictionary meaning.

In Finnish mythology, Pohjola is a sinister country ruled by the evil witch Louhi, and often linked to the Underworld. However, the women of Pohjola are greatly desired by men. The heroes of the land of Kalevala woo the women of Pohjola, seeking to marry them.

In Finnish folklore, Loviatar is a goddess of death and pestilence. She was impregnated by a great wind, and so gave birth to nine diseases (her sons): Consumption, Colic, Gout, Rickets, Ulcer, Scab, Cancer, Plague, and a ninth unnamed one (who is the worst).

Along Aleksanterinkatu in Helsinki stands the striking Pohjola Building, a hallmark of Finnish National Romantic architecture from the early 1900s. Designed by Gesellius–Lindgren–Saarinen, its fortress-like exterior is constructed from rugged soapstone quarried in Juuka.

The building’s most distinctive feature is its sculptural stone carvings—bears, pine trees, and expressive human faces—set into the façade. Created by Hilda Flodin (1877–1958), one of Finland’s first professional sculptors and a rare woman in the field at the time, they draw on imagery from the Kalevala and Finnish folk tradition.

After dusk, carefully placed lighting highlights the textures and makes the figures seem almost alive.

The #WinterWar, i.e., the #Soviet invasion of #Finland, ended on #ThisDayInHistory in 1940 with the signing of the #MoscowPeaceTreaty. This cost Finland half of #WestKarelia (#EastKarelia was already in Russia). It was in #Karelia that most folk tales in the #Kalevala were found.

The greatest hero in Finnish folklore is Väinämöinen, a mighty warrior, shaman, and musician with a magical voice. He once slew a giant pike and made the first kantele (a traditional Finnish plucked-string instrument) from the pike's jaw and a young lady's hair.
