Me at 8am: urgh, how am I gonna get through today?

Me when the elvanse kicks in: I am the world-historical universal subject! Gather round all; a deluge of witty, insightful despatches is forthcoming from my writing desk!

Me at 3pm: oh boy I’m very sleepy!

Right, #Philosophy gang: thinking about my Masters dissertation subject. I want to do something on Philosophy of Mind and the hard question of consciousness/Mary’s Room but looking at what more Continental-leaning philosophers/approaches can add to the debate. Does anyone have any recommendations along these lines? Interested particularly in Hegel and Hegelian approaches but open to all sorts…#philosophy #philosophyofmind #AnalyticPhilosophy #continentalphilosophy #Hegel

I know it seems appropriate (and probably is) to focus our sympathy/anger/activism during this cost-of-living crisis on the fact that loads of people are struggling with basic survival and essential services are falling apart BUT to me the tragedy is that the situation forces us to focus on basic survival and the expense of joy, higher actualisation, fun, and general silliness. This is the stuff that makes life worth living and it’s so sad to lose it or to feel guilty about ever minor indulgence

I find social mobility, as it seems to exist in the imagination of establishment politicians and think-tank wonks, to be such an unappealing concept. I have very little desire to advance in front of others as part of some constant zero-sum game, to become even more debt-saddled, overworked, and generally unfree; and for what? A few extra toys and gadgets? Some ephemeral sense of status? Why can’t I just live a happy, comfortable, dignified life where I am? #capitalism #class #Socialmobility
Apropos of nothing, my favourite #AnalyticPhilosophy philosophers (speaking as a #continentalphilosophy - leaning person) are Sellars, McDowell and Austin. Who are yours? #philosophy
Is there a term for it in philosophy where you’ve read both sides of a given question and find them both to be compelling enough and struggle to come down strongly either way? Is this just what happens when you’re struggling to find yourself sufficient engaged by a particular question?

Right then, here’s my intro:

I’m a 31 year old father-of-two. I work in the ad industry in the UK which we’re currently trying to unionise: https://www.creativecommsunion.uk.

I’m also a Marxist, philosophy MA, writer and enjoyer of literary fiction, popular culture and music. Also interested in history, politics, critical theory and culture studies.
