I finished Nabokov's "Pnin" last night.

What a delight it was! Funny, clever, and oddly moving.

I would recommend getting hold of the Everyman's Library edition, as the introduction by David Lodge is both informative and perceptive.

Nabokov's advice to foreigners learning Russian, giving pronunciation advice on how to reposition one's jaw and taking slightly sadistic pleasure in highlighting its intimidating array of verb suffixes.

This most recent notebook I've dedicated to "Things I Detest" a la Nabokov, who cheerily shares some of what he detests in a 1965 interview at around the 17:56 mark.

When he lists different types of music (inflicted music, next-room music, portable music), I never related to anything so much in my life.

And I thought . . . well, you don't have a to be a literary genius to compile a notebook of things that you detest.

And I've done this before -- as a highly sensitive person, it's cathartic to write about that which causes discomfort.

But I'll probably also start a notebook listing things that I love.

So far, my list includes "appliances that beep," "when it rains, but not enough to justify an umbrella," and "being in-between books."

I absolutely love the way Nabokov depicts a dreamy woman in GLORY. He describes her skirt being "pressed against her knees by the same breeze that had once filled Ulysses' sails." Perfect. No notes.
