In my free time, I’m into #BoardGames, #VideoGames on #Xbox, and reading #NonFiction #books. Books help me discover new ideas, while games help me think through decision spaces and problem solving.

“It’s only by facing our finitude that we can step into a truly authentic relationship with life.” - Oliver Burkeman, Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals #Books #Bookstodon #QuoteOfTheDay
Hey #boardgames Mastodon and friends! I’m so sorry I’ve been largely in lurker status the past few weeks. It’s been a bit busier on the home and work front. Largely all good things, thankfully. That said, had to join in on the customary monthly summary, courtesy of the great @BGStatsApp!

Our latest #BoardGames meetup was a fun time again last night! We first played two games of Nidavellir, a new game for all at the table, myself included. Big thanks to Rob who taught us so well how to play.

Then, I got to teach The Quest for El Dorado to the table — and was a very fun game to spectate, given it’s a frantic race to be the first to reach El Dorado! Congrats to Liz with the giant machete approach, edging out Kevin to steal the win!

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, especially in light of my recent experience teaching new #BoardGames last weekend. 100% agree with @Elizhargrave: we in the hobby need to remember to be kind. Grateful for this reminder!

This Friday, Becca and I returned to the #BoardGames meetup we checked out a couple of weeks ago. However, I did not play any games this time. I got to enjoy doing something even more rewarding: teaching two new games to others, including some brand new people to the meetup!

It’s really nice seeing the #BoardGames community here post these monthly updates looking back at our play history. Thank you to each of you sharing. I’m really enjoying seeing the variety of games and the diversity of those enjoying them. 🎲

That said, here are my BG stats from the month of July 2023! The main highlight for me would be Becca and I attending our first local #BoardGameMeetup! We played Akropolis, and Ra — we really liked Ra.

This weekend in board games, part 2: Becca and I went to a local #boardgames meetup!

Shoutouts to Jason and Rob who taught us two new games: Akropolis and the classic game, Ra. It’s evident they have hearts of a teacher and wanted Becca and I as newcomers to have a great experience. And we did - it was so much fun!

Another unexpected way that this game hit me hard is when I connected a set of trains between Calicut and Quilon, two cities in the state my dad's side is from, Kerala, and it dawned on me that I had been on that train running through those cities several times in my childhood. I also traced to my wife some of the tracks that roughly paralleled the travel I have done across India when I lived there primarily through Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the west coast up to Mumbai.

#BoardGames #India

Our last weekend in #boardgames Part 1: @wowdear and I enjoyed our first time playing Ticket to Ride: India! It was especially remarkable because I'm natively from there. It was a bit bittersweet because it's theme was 1910 colonial India so not a big fan of the rose tinted lens of that time, but it also has India and Pakistan as one nation, which was something great, before the arguably divisive tactics employed by the British rule had led to the Partition.
#ThrowbackThursday 3 years ago, Becca and I got into #7WondersDuel, which has become one of our favorite 2 player only games. It’s impressive how they put a very deep and interestingly crafted game into such a short time window. I haven’t played the original #7Wonders too much outside of BGA, but this is a great offering! #BoardGames
