#knittersofmastodon, my friend Lynn just released a free headband pattern to support #mmiwg2s #WeekofAction. Download on revelry, & make a donation to the #Alaska Native Women’s Resource Center or an org of your choice.
Pic of my test knit, in red alpaca yarn, 2 strands held double.
No matter which way the arrow points, this headband is going in the right direction! Knit back and forth, Arrowband features a simple 2 row pattern repeat, in both written and chart form. It’s designed with over 4” of negative ease for a snug fit that allows for stretch over time. Arrowband is easy to modify, and will work well with various yarns.
For years I’ve been ✨obsessed✨ with the emergence of pasque flowers around the neighborhood, and sharing an almanac on social media (#denalipasquealmnac on IG). There’s a couple steep south facing slopes, one of which is sort of collapsing, where the snow melts early. This year I’m turning it into a photo essay for AK Humanities Forum, & I’m just waiting for the 3’ of snow to melt so they can get beyond this nubbin stage.
I’ve got a new short piece up at Panorama Journal, on ownership, history, and gravel (it always comes back to gravel):

I was a #nationalparkservice brat, & spent some formative childhood years at #wupatki national monument in northern AZ. I still hold the place close, & visited yesterday w my parents.
I haven’t written much about that time or place, but published one piece from a couple years ago here: https://aboutplacejournal.org/issues/geographies-of-justice/ascents-and-descents-the-struggle-continues/erica-watson/
I made scrap yarn leggings for a friend. This was such a fun project, using designer Elizabeth Zimmermann’s 1968 lady leggings pattern (can be made for anyone, obvs). Zimmermann described this one as “sweaters from the waist down.”
I love the deceptive simplicity of Zimmermann’s patterns. She wrote, “Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn't hurt the untroubled spirit either,” & I’m finding a lot to that this winter.
Cold snap knitting project: 2 versions of the #aldercreekcowl, designed by my friend Lynn. Warmed up to -20 today, so I did a little photo shoot in the Solstice sun.
One is made with a merino yarn by #fairbanks yarn co 64 North Fibers, the other a #qiviut blend Lynn gave me after I helped comb a musk ox hide for fiber. Fun and adaptable pattern, available on Ravelry.
#Solstice aurora from the bedroom window.
Ready for the light, this year more than usual.
