How to follow Mastodon Hashtags

1. Login on your Mastodon account from your PC (unlike Twitter, Mastodon is not well optimized as an app yet)

2. Search for your desired hashtag. Example: #mastodonon

3. Click on your desired hashtag.

4. You will get the below picture at the top of your screen.

5. Click on the (person+) button - I put it in a red circle below for clarification.

πŸ” Repost for everyone to know. Follow me for daily tips.

By the way, I'm now actively blocking anyone coming here to argue about the merits of donating to the NON-PROFIT that builds Mastodon.

It's absolute dirtbag behaviour when Mastodon struggles so much under a #TwitterMigration of millions of users.

Now lets put things into perspective. Last month, Twitter was employing 6,500 people. Mastodon employs 1 person who's working 14 hour days -- and only compensates himself €36,000 a year.

How is one guy supposed to take build the app that replaces Twitter when Twitter pays hundreds of engineers well over $100,000 to do a fraction of the work?

Yeah, other people deserve donations too -- so donate! Be a hero to the person who's running your instance, as well as the person who builds whatever app your instance is running.

And lest you think that I don't bang the drums on donations for other devs, this is not the case.

Last week, I told everyone to donate to @dansup. A couple of days ago, I told everyone to donate to @Are0h who, by the way, is making another app that builds safety features for marginalized communities. And I'm banging the drum all the time on @[email protected] and his work with Calckey.

But right now, I'm urging people to help out with Mastodon!

So if you have it in your heart to donate to a very good cause -- the continued development and existence of Mastodon -- contribute to Mastodon's Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/mastodon

A few tips for newcomers, as I have learned myself since joining Mastodon (updated with edits)...

#AltText Descriptions: Please use them to add text to your images, many folks here depend upon them and have been using them for years before we all arrived. This helps people who are visually impaired, and frankly, it's fun to come up with interesting descriptions for everyone. Also, for videos: try to upload a link instead of clogging your server with the file.

#CamelCase: When you use hashtags, use Camel Case if you have more than one word: #WelcomeToMastodon is easier to read than #welcometomastodon - so do that. This makes a big difference for people who are using screen readers. Use WAAAAY more hashtags than you are used to on Twitter. Mastodon is hashtag dependent. Also, it is generally good to put hashtags at the bottom of the post (unlike this post) as it is easier for screen readers.

#ContentWarning: This is important, nuanced and controversial - therefore, important. What I wrote before was, "If you are posting something that might even in the slightest trigger another person, use the Content Warning (CW) option that you can toggle on at the bottom of the toot window. It's polite here. People can choose how they want to view and interact. Use CW more than you are used to on Twitter." I would add, people's lived experiences, whether racial, gender/sexual-identified, or of other important qualities, do not fall under this category. Former presidents of the US, yes, IMHO, they DO fall under this category. Use your judgement. Imagine you are sitting opposite someone in a cafe; would you blast them with your opinion on the subject you're broaching, or would you get a sense of the vibe of the connection first? Use a CW while you are getting to know the vibe. And if you don't want to keep doing the extra clicking to see what is under a CW when you scroll, you can go to Preferences > Appearance > Always expand posts marked with content warnings.

#Diversity: A few people have commented, "lots of white men here!" Well, ok, but you can also find each other by using hashtags like #WomenInSTEM #BlackMastodon and many more including my favorites that I started up: #Desi and #MixedDesi (i.e. me). Start your own if you don't see yourself represented, so others can find you, too. Other popular ones I've seen are #BIPOC, #BlackTwitter, #Indigenous #Trans, #TransPOC, #TransAwareness. Many more good ones.

#DMs: DMs are under the globe option in the Toot aka Publish window for privacy setting and they appear in your full list / feed of notifications (don't freak out at that). Honestly, this still freaks me out. I've started to DM people with, "DMing you here..." so that they know it's a DM. Maybe it's just me, getting to be familiar with this...

#Donations: This is all run by volunteers. Make a donation. Click on the "about this server" at the bottom of your screen (might appear in a different location than on mine) and find out who is running your server and how to make a donation. And thank them! Donating to Mastodon generally does NOT apparently filter down to your server admin, so you might do both.

#Filters: Adding this one in my edits. On your computer (and maybe some apps) you can find Filters under Preferences so that you can weed out content for yourself. Experiment with it. A tip: just add one word at time; separating with commas does not do anything.

#Introductions: Please write a friendly intro and use the hashtag #introduction so people can learn about you. Be interested in others. Grow your community through daily, friendly interaction.

#SlowMode: Ahh the ease of Slow Mode (in your Preferences settings)... you can control the feeds so that you just click "new items" at the top, giving you time to catch up.

Have fun! This is like a big global cafe with many tables to sit at, and conversations to be had. Consider how you show up for the conversations. Check your bias at the door - and it's totally fine to acknowledge you have one. We are all here together being human, figuring it out, one post at a time. No judgement from this table. Use Mastodon as an opportunity to practice self-awareness and kindness in the cafe.

Welcome!

Hoot! Toot! Did you think you didn't need to see a basket of baby owls (Owlets) today!? I was the same, how wrong I was.❀️😊 #HootToot #Toot #boost #OwlsofMastodon! Pic credit: Ekaterina Gakman.

@ImDahAnoushka Hey Welcome, you'd love it here, go through my boosts and pinned tweet to know more about the platform.

Important Mastodon Newbie Info 🐘:

There are no ads here,
and this is not a corporation.
This is a Federation  β€‹

The person(s) taking care of everything needed for you to have an account here is likely doing it solely out of generosity for the community. This even costs THEM money. Not to mention the enormous cost in time!

Support your instance’s administration(s) every way you can. This is important πŸ’š

HOW TO ❓

You can find who does this for you by looking up the About page for your server/instance.

You usually can find this page by adding β€œ/about” after your instance’s name in a browser. Your instance name is what is after your handle name, after the second β€œ@β€œ (for example, mine is: infosec.exchange/about).

πŸ‘‰ Help financially if you can: Many administrator(s) will have a page setup for donations. If not, you can ask them

πŸ‘‰ Offer your time to help if you can: Ask if they need support with moderation and such πŸ’ͺ

πŸ‘‰ Do not use Report as a joke. Only Report when necessary 😌

πŸ‘‰ BE KIND! Cheers them up! Say thanks! They are doing this for you πŸ’š

Y’all, if you’re getting frustrated you’re not seeing the content you want to like news or intel you need on Mastodon, you really need to shift your thinking from algorithmic social media. Follower counts don’t matter much here. Likes do not matter to post reach. Without your interaction, you will just see a live FIFO firehose. Some quick fixes:

Hashtag your posts liberally and consistently, and follow key hashtags of interest to you. Hashtags matter a ton here to being seen.

Follow and also alert on accounts you always want to see content from.

Consider using the built in RSS feature for your feeds and for specific hashtags.

Consider switching to the more advanced UI in your preferences, so you can watch multiple filtered and unfiltered feeds. Or a different mobile app.

Use Fedifinder to follow all the accounts you followed on Twitter, and sync up your follow and block lists.

Avail yourself of the multiple public lists of hundreds of journalist accounts on Mastodon.
