A few tips for newcomers, as I have learned myself since joining Mastodon (updated with edits)...

#AltText Descriptions: Please use them to add text to your images, many folks here depend upon them and have been using them for years before we all arrived. This helps people who are visually impaired, and frankly, it's fun to come up with interesting descriptions for everyone. Also, for videos: try to upload a link instead of clogging your server with the file.

#CamelCase: When you use hashtags, use Camel Case if you have more than one word: #WelcomeToMastodon is easier to read than #welcometomastodon - so do that. This makes a big difference for people who are using screen readers. Use WAAAAY more hashtags than you are used to on Twitter. Mastodon is hashtag dependent. Also, it is generally good to put hashtags at the bottom of the post (unlike this post) as it is easier for screen readers.

#ContentWarning: This is important, nuanced and controversial - therefore, important. What I wrote before was, "If you are posting something that might even in the slightest trigger another person, use the Content Warning (CW) option that you can toggle on at the bottom of the toot window. It's polite here. People can choose how they want to view and interact. Use CW more than you are used to on Twitter." I would add, people's lived experiences, whether racial, gender/sexual-identified, or of other important qualities, do not fall under this category. Former presidents of the US, yes, IMHO, they DO fall under this category. Use your judgement. Imagine you are sitting opposite someone in a cafe; would you blast them with your opinion on the subject you're broaching, or would you get a sense of the vibe of the connection first? Use a CW while you are getting to know the vibe. And if you don't want to keep doing the extra clicking to see what is under a CW when you scroll, you can go to Preferences > Appearance > Always expand posts marked with content warnings.

#Diversity: A few people have commented, "lots of white men here!" Well, ok, but you can also find each other by using hashtags like #WomenInSTEM #BlackMastodon and many more including my favorites that I started up: #Desi and #MixedDesi (i.e. me). Start your own if you don't see yourself represented, so others can find you, too. Other popular ones I've seen are #BIPOC, #BlackTwitter, #Indigenous #Trans, #TransPOC, #TransAwareness. Many more good ones.

#DMs: DMs are under the globe option in the Toot aka Publish window for privacy setting and they appear in your full list / feed of notifications (don't freak out at that). Honestly, this still freaks me out. I've started to DM people with, "DMing you here..." so that they know it's a DM. Maybe it's just me, getting to be familiar with this...

#Donations: This is all run by volunteers. Make a donation. Click on the "about this server" at the bottom of your screen (might appear in a different location than on mine) and find out who is running your server and how to make a donation. And thank them! Donating to Mastodon generally does NOT apparently filter down to your server admin, so you might do both.

#Filters: Adding this one in my edits. On your computer (and maybe some apps) you can find Filters under Preferences so that you can weed out content for yourself. Experiment with it. A tip: just add one word at time; separating with commas does not do anything.

#Introductions: Please write a friendly intro and use the hashtag #introduction so people can learn about you. Be interested in others. Grow your community through daily, friendly interaction.

#SlowMode: Ahh the ease of Slow Mode (in your Preferences settings)... you can control the feeds so that you just click "new items" at the top, giving you time to catch up.

Have fun! This is like a big global cafe with many tables to sit at, and conversations to be had. Consider how you show up for the conversations. Check your bias at the door - and it's totally fine to acknowledge you have one. We are all here together being human, figuring it out, one post at a time. No judgement from this table. Use Mastodon as an opportunity to practice self-awareness and kindness in the cafe.

Welcome!

@maiakbc thanks for the tips! Just joined myself and need to learn.
@fullvelocity Welcome, and now you have your first follower!
@maiakbc Thank you, this was very helpful
@maiakbc Thank you so much for this. I really appreciate it. It's scary to be a part of something new, and yeah there is a certain amount of "this space existed before you got here," so thank you for being so clear. It's appreciated and heard.
@loudmouthbrowngirl You're welcome! Also, BC! I'm from Vancouver and my parents live in Burnaby now; I have been in the US (NJ-NY) for a long time. Nice to meet you. Also - marijuana - my next novel which is about to come out, is about #medicalmarijuana ... see you soon around and about here. :-)
@maiakbc hey thats cool on all fronts! Keep us updated on the book.
@maiakbc I've been told that #CamelCase for hashtags makes things *considerably* easier for screen reader applications.
@jmcp @maiakbc Thank You! I've been a proponent of CamelCase in hashtags for YEARS, but it's always been "well, it's easier for me to read". If it also makes it more accessible for those who use screen readers, I don't need to feel guilty that I'm just pushing a personal preference.
How do you write over 500 characters?
@Sye It is set by your individual server, I believe. Mine allows 5,000.
@maiakbc super helpful tips for newcomers (like me). Thank you!
@maiakbc very helpful, thank you for this!
@maiakbc this was very helpful! Thank you!
@Briggsy you're welcome, also following you now. 🙂
@maiakbc first full day here and seeing posts like this makes me so hopeful that this is going to be a MUCH different experience than the blue bird. Thank you so much for all the info. 🙂
@TheIndigoDingo You're welcome. It's as different as we allow it to be.
@maiakbc Thanks. Only been on here a matter of hours so very much still have my L plates on.

@maiakbc thanks for all the tips. I’m new and started following you.
@maiakbc Thank you! This was so helpful :)
@maiakbc Wow, this is such a good intro for newbies like myself that have forgotten what it was like to begin in a new platform. Thanks for the tips
@maiakbc
great summary thank you 🥰
@maiakbc - I would also just say that I learned a few days ago that putting hashtags at the bottom helps make things considerably easier and cleaner for anyone using a screenreader 😀👍
@maiakbc Really helpful, thanks for the tips!
@maiakbc @Calamur camelcase is also read correctly by screen readers. #accesibility #mastodontip
@maiakbc thank you this is quite helpful
@maiakbc awesome of you to post that. Helpful indeed. Thank you
@maiakbc Thanks for explaining Camel case which I've seen in a few places and had not googled. I thought it was a typeface!
@maiakbc danke fürs teilen
@maiakbc I'm so happy there are users on here that are helping those of us who've relocated to learn the etiquette and a few how-to's here! Yall are heroes!
@cavalasphawkes I’m a newbie too…! We are all in this together.

@maiakbc Thanks for the tips and the follow!

I missed world traveling too! Our Med Cruise on the 5 masted clipper ship was put on hold for a couple years thanks to you-know-what. In the meantime, we padded before and after stays ending up with 2 months total. It was too much, honestly, but it was great to get back out there.

What's holding you back?

@AzWz @AzWz I'm not sure the "what's holding you back" was intended as a reply on this specific post, but I'll bite!

What's holding me back ... as relates to this initial post ...

expressing myself ... using hashtags ... hmm ... I feel pretty good about my hashtags ...

so what's holding me back ... about ... using CamelCase ... no, I'm improving there too ...

maybe it's what is holding me back in terms of expressing my diversity as a woman in science ... that could be it. I'll work on expressing my diversity as a woman of mixed race in science.

Thanks for the nudge!

#MixedRace
#WomenInScience

@maiakbc

Hi Maia. It was intended for @MamaGoose as to what's holding her back from world traveling.

But I'm glad it nudged you into questioning what's holding you back and will follow you in hopes of seeing you cut loose and grow.

@maiakbc I’ve tried to work out how to make a #Donation but I can’t see, “about this server,” anywhere on my screen.
@maiakbc ignore my last post, I logged in on my PC and was able to find it. Thanks for your excellent tips.
@maiakbc Thank you! I'm still learning.
@maiakbc Thank you, really helpful.
