We put huge batteries for long ranges in EVs and then rarely drive over 50 miles a day. Is there another way to think about EV batteries?

For the latest battery report, I charted the effects of a potential repeal of the $7,500 federal incentive and of course tariffs on EV sales.
I used our sales forecast for U.S. plug-in EV sales as a base case. In the most extreme scenario (PED of -1.91), repealing the $7,500 federal rebate (essentially a 15% price increase plus a potential 25% price increase from tariffs, could mean losing over 75% of the forecasted U.S. sales volume.

Amprius Technologies Selects Colorado for Gigawatt-Hour Scale Factory Site

Amprius Technologies, Inc. (“Amprius” or the “Company”) (NYSE: AMPX), a leader in lithium-ion batteries with its Silicon Anode Platform, today announc

This wasn't part of the What's Next for EV Batteries series, but it should be. Battery manufacturing hasn't changed all that much since the 90s when Sony first commercialized the li-ion battery. Despite the automated-pack-assembly picture, it's the cell assembly that's bloated and inefficient. The first step that should go? According to Dr. Yan Wang at AM Batteries , it's the slurry.

While some were disappointed with Tesla's Investor Day presentation, I saw some bright spots in Lars Moravy 's design and manufacturing presentation. Tesla's ability to analyze, deconstruct, and remake their production line is an advantage and a barrier legacy automakers may have to overcome.

Just posted the second part of a series about the future of battery technology. It's mostly focused on the chemistries you can expect to see; high-silicon anodes, high-manganese cathodes, and little bit about CATL's plan for sodium batteries.

Starting to repost from LinkedIn. This is a free story about growing EV exports from China. China is seeing a slowdown in EV sales growth (still growing but not as fast) domestically. No matter, EV makers are looking abroad for sales. Chinese automakers exported more NEVs in the first 11 months of 2022 than during 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, combined!

Chinese EV Makers Going Global

Chinese electric-vehicle makers are exporting more cars than ever before. While the pace of sales growth at home is slowing, the long-awaited removal of the zero-COVID policy may not be the boon everyone hoped for.
