You receive a call on your phone.
The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?

The Giant Greenish-Blue Dragon Mural — Kuantan, Malaysia
A three-story dragon coils around a spiral staircase, appearing to slither across the building’s surface. The detailed scales and vivid blues contrast with the black wall, giving this mural an almost cinematic presence. The mural is part of Project 06 at Kuantan Art Street in Pahang.

#Windows #RDP lets you log in using revoked passwords. #Microsoft is OK with that.

Researchers say the behavior amounts to a persistent #backdoor.

In response, Microsoft said the behavior is a “a design decision (...) As such, Microsoft said the behavior doesn’t meet the definition of a #security #vulnerability, and company engineers have no plans to change it.

Convincing people and organizations to join the #Fediverse can be a frustrating undertaking.
@weddige is this a real xkcd?
@undltd no, this is a variation of https://xkcd.com/927/ done by me.

@KarlHeinzHasliP @weddige it would be good to acknowledge it's derived from https://xkcd.com/927/ while you're at it.

@weddige I kind of enjoy the lack of press-release-blurting accounts in the Fediverse. Would be nice if more organizations came to realize the "social" part in social media instead of "just another marketing channel" / "free ad distribution"
@thomas I guess one reason, why a lot of social media managers hesitate to use the Fediverse, is that they can't just recycle the uninspired marketing texts they are posting everywhere else. The effort from running a successful fediverse account comes less from it being yet another channel, but the users expecting value from it. And you can't just buy reach.

Ich klau das mal und reib das einigen Leuten unter die Nase ✊
@weddige I actually wonder if it's the same thing as "Why wouldn't companies self-host their own FOSS <thing>?"
The question of responsibility and having someone else to blame.

@art_codesmith a paid, commercial Mastodon instance (that doesn't even advertise itself as Mastodon) might actually help the Fediverse overall. The USP could be support and maybe some additional features for influencers and social media teams.

But if that is what's missing, it would be terribly sad, especially because we have huge instances in the Fediverse, that already do a great job.

@weddige I'm not sure about commercial Mastodon instances, but I've heard that there are services that deploy and maintain Mastodon for you.
