“Police cannot pick and choose when the First Amendment applies. Journalists in Los Angeles were not caught in the crossfire — they were targeted." - National Press Club President Mike Balsamo https://www.press.org/newsroom/national-press-club-condemns-police-targeting-journalists-covering-los-angeles-protests
National Press Club Condemns Police Targeting of Journalists Covering Los Angeles Protests

WASHINGTON, June 9 — Following multiple disturbing incidents in which Los Angeles police and sheriff’s deputies targeted, injured, and obstructed journalists covering public protests, National Press Club President Mike Balsamo issued the following statement today: “Police cannot pick and choose when the First Amendment applies. Journalists in Los Angeles were not caught in the crossfire — they were targeted. A CNN reporter and crew were forcibly removed from a protest zone in downtown Los Angeles, despite journalists being exempt from dispersal orders under California law, and security personnel working with a CNN team were briefly detained. In another widely viewed incident, an Australian television journalist was struck by a less-lethal round fired by police while reporting live on air. Other journalists were injured, blocked from continuing to report, or denied safe access to observe police activity and arrests. When police target journalists, they are targeting the public’s right to know. With protests continuing in Los Angeles, police must ensure that reporters can safely do their jobs — not obstruct them or place them in harm’s way. The public depends on their reporting to understand what is happening on the ground. The National Press Club is calling on Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell and Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna to immediately: • Stop targeting, detaining, or obstructing journalists. • Guarantee that journalists can safely observe and report on public demonstrations. • Investigate these incidents and hold those responsible accountable. Thousands of LAPD personnel have received training that includes instruction on how to work safely with journalists during public demonstrations. We urge officers to put that training into practice, and to respect the critical role of the press in keeping the public informed. A journalist struck by a police-fired round while reporting live. Reporters detained for doing their jobs. A free society depends on a free press — and police must respect that. Los Angeles officials must act now. The world is watching.” About the National Press Club Founded in 1908, the National Press Club is the world’s leading professional organization for journalists. Based in Washington, D.C., the Club has nearly 3,000 members representing nearly every major news organization. It hosts newsmakers from around the globe, champions press freedom worldwide through its Press Freedom Center and serves as a hub for journalistic excellence and advocacy. If you would like to protest Trump's unconstitutional seizure of power, consider finding a No King's protest near you this Saturday. Instead of the news focusing on his military parade on his birthday, nationwide protests will help steal his thunder and hopefully bring the focus back to the people, instead of this would-be monarch.

No Kings

On June 14—Flag Day—Donald Trump wants tanks in the street and a made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday. A spectacle meant to look like strength. But real power isn’t staged in Washington. It rises up everywhere else.

No Kings

Wir gedenken: Heute vor 20 Jahren, am 9. Juni 2005, wurde İsmail Yaşar in seinem Imbiss in #Nürnberg vom #NSU ermordet. Er wurde 50 Jahre alt.

#KeinVergessen #KeinSchlussstrich

Um 18 Uhr gibt es in der Scharrerstraße eine Kundgebung im Gedenken an İsmail Yaşar.

Guten Morgen liebes Fediverse!

@Crispius That man said it as clear as daylight.

@Crispius also the Problem is the people that enable.them.

Trump on his own couldn't deport many people, so he needs armed goons to do his racism and facism for him!

@Crispius 70 million people voted for what is happening now, they'll pretend they didn't ask for this, but only because the rest of us will be mean to the if they didn't, they haven't learned a fucking thing

#MAGA #Fascism

@Lazarou @Crispius

Good start! Now ask, "who's been working the soil?"

@Crispius
Thank you, this often gets forgotten in the fervor of contempt, on both sides of any narrative. Thank you also for putting the alt text on this too 😹

@Crispius

Yep. The entire Republican party needs to be lit up like a Tesla.

@Crispius And believe it or not, there are even worse people lined up for miles waiting for their chance.

@Crispius
Thank you. This needs to be said.

Long after Trump is gone, Trump voters will still be voting. The seeds of what we are seeing now have been planted during Nixon, Reagan, Bush I, Bush II, etc.

What must be defeated is conservatism, and the liberal urge to "reach across the aisle in the spirit of bipartisanship."

I find Trump as repulsive as most people here, but as a German, one thing I want to push back on is focusing only on one man. Hitler's rise was possible because he was able to exploit the racial hatred and conspiratorial thinking that already existed. It's MAGA acolytes that see Trump as an extraordinary figure. He was a reality show grifter with a crumbling business; Hitler was an undisciplined drifter with delusions of grandeur. It's the soil that matters, not just the rotten harvest.

@Crispius

Not just MAGA but "standard" conservatives.

Conservatism is the poison at the root of so many of society's ills. Raciam, economic inequality, pollution, election interferance, homophobia and transphobia, child poverty etc.

@Crispius

Moeller is correct, and his point is vital: even if Trump were to die or be removed from office today, the atrocities and the dismantling of the USA would not abate.

@Crispius We need to stress out that Hitler was a fucking loser. Look at his paintings. Literally look them up online. They’re disgusting. He didn’t see any other point in art than self-aggrandizing, and he was rejected from the Fine Arts Academy for trivial reasons.

Every fascist I can think of out there is a literal loser promoted by bourgeois media. I think we need to stress that out. Marine Le Pen lacks the most basic education. Jordan Bardella is barely able to write. Ronald Reagan’s daughter IIRC has weighed in during a controversy about Donald Trump’s alleged dementia.

As a result, bourgeois media normalize mediocrity to make poor people ashamed as a social class of course, but also to normalize fascism.

@Crispius

Trump was not an elite project.

GOP resisted Trump in 2016, but his popular support was overwhelming.

Now Trump has taken over GOP and continues to rely on popular support.

2024 Harris campaign handsomely overspent Trump campaign even with help from Musk and others.

Musk,Thiel, Bezos, Zuckerberg, saw what was coming and attempted to opportunistically exploit the situation. Somehow Trump just fails everyone with his chaos.

@Crispius This is particularly important because when it all comes tumbling down we can't let the rest of the GOP go "that was all Trump, not us."
@Crispius And in a sense the chicken has come home to roost.
The nazi party took a great deal of inspiration from the racist segregation laws of the south, as they themselves stated even.
@Crispius Don't forget to blame the enablers, supporters and acolytes. In our case it's the House and Senate GOP.
@Crispius Trump is a Mary Sue character for every narcissistic petty incompetent worthless man out there. His presence in the white house makes them feel powerful because FINALLY they see someone as useless as they are in a position of power and that's the best Viagra in the world for their yeasty shrivelled dinky and fragile egos. They'll just blame others for every one of his failures because they're too busy dreaming he is them.
@Crispius Very wise words indeed
Trump's picks have strong ties to Project 2025

Donald Trump distanced himself from the conservative Project 2025 playbook throughout his campaign. Now, he is tapping its contributors to lead his government.

“The PayPal Mafia”: Meet the South African Oligarchs Surrounding Trump, from Elon Musk to Peter Thiel

President Trump’s targeting of South Africa is clearly tied to his influential adviser Elon Musk and a coterie of wealthy U.S. oligarchs, “all of whom in some way or other grew up in South Africa as children.” These men are known as the “PayPal mafia” due to their involvement in the founding of the financial tech company PayPal, explains reporter Chris McGreal. McGreal, a former South Africa correspondent for The Guardian, outlines Musk’s pro-apartheid and neo-Nazi family history, which appears to form the basis of his adherence to a right-wing ideology that believes white South Africans “are the victims of the end of apartheid” and at risk of a “white genocide.”

Because it showed up in my feed today as an image with no AltText.

I boosted the OG post when it was written too. (Over 100 days ago)

It’s just as relevant today as it was then.
@eloquence

@Crispius @eloquence ah nice. alt text is important.
@Crispius
Germany has faced and confronted its past. The U.S. has allowed its underbelly of tribal hatred to flourish until a front man like trump let it out into the light. I so wish our country had the courage of yours and not the antiquated need to plough our conspiratorial soil.
@Crispius
As I keep trying to remind everyone: this is NOT Donald Trump destroying the country. It is, in every way, the Republican Party destroying the country, and entirely on purpose.
@Crispius minor rant:
people see nazis as things they could never be. things their neighbors could never be. puppy kickers with devilish horns and a tail or something. totally evil.
but if you weren't someone the nazis hated, you could easily not know they were nazis.
1/2
@Crispius nazis were people and that's what's so fucking terrifying. if they weren't people it wouldn't challenge our idea of humanity. but they were.
33 percent of germans (a plurality) freely voted for hitler.
so yes, nazis can be people you know. they're neighbors, parents, coworkers, Starbucks baristas.
and if we treat nazis as obviously detectable, we pave the way for nazism.
because they don't kick puppies. they don't have horns. so how could they possibly be a nazi?

@Crispius

Resonates with explanatory power: “It's the soil that matters, not just the rotten harvest.” 😐
Thanks for sharing.

@Crispius Thank you. This is a point I made many times during his first administration. He's not the real problem, and never was. He's just the most glaring symptom of a much bigger problem, which traces back to our earliest history. If he dies tomorrow, that much bigger problem will still persist, and won't be solved by his loss.

We in the US must confront the historical evil within us as a nation and a people, not just one man who happens to embody it right now.

@Crispius marines already started cheerig when Trump Spike against Major and Gov.. auch one of them a easy target for fashims, Equally bad than the Officer shooting at reporters out of sadism or beating and stomping people on the floor for power Trips
