I love slime molds.
I think the speaker's reasoning is a little flawed. Oats are dead and free calories. Mushrooms are still alive and have spent about 300M years making themselves unappealing to other fungi.
The trained group has probably learned how to get around a defense, most likely by working together to wick away a toxin or similar. The other acts blindly at first and is sickened.
When they meet, the solution is shared.
