A free-wheeling open-to-all book club that met at 4pm every month first Sunday at Semmozhi Poonga, Chennai. Now online.

I picked up book 7 of the #2023ReadingList on a whim to satisfy this month's "colours" theme in @poongabook.

The Queen Of Jasmine Country by Sharanya Manivannan.

I was pleasantly surprised by the writing and I really liked the book. TBH, I was moved when reading the part where Andal writes the first Thiruppaavai. I especially liked how the author ended the book. Respecting the myth, but making it her—and Andal's— own.

Highly recommended.

⚪️ The Poonga book theme for March is "Colours".

Let your imagination fly and select a book you think suits the theme.

⏰ Join us online on Sunday, March 5th, 4pm IST for the discussion. DM on that day for the link.

Let’s keep the conversation going.

There should be no doubt in future about who is responsible. 😝

@JayaprakashSatyamurthy We were aware of the daunting and sometimes dreary task of plodding through Proust. Hence fortified ourselves as a group and egg each other on :-)
Proust in Poonga, our book club meet on reading Proust was held yesterday. We had planned to discuss Swann's Way in Poobga. The Poonga was closed for maintenance after the storm that lashed Chennai city. But undaunted we scouted for nearby coffeeshops and held our meet inThe Brew Room, Savera. We tried to explain our astonishment at what Proust had achieved. Like numerous readers before us we touched upon the greatness of the novel, but it wasn't enough. There were home made Madeleines too.
After starting and abandoning both for some reason in 2019, I finished Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude last year and I've restarted Love in the Time of Cholera last week. Both as #audiobooks in #audible. I like the narrators of both books, John Lee (Solitude) and Armando Durán (Cholera).
@chenthil had talked in a @poongabook meeting about Gregory Rabassa's #translation of Solitude and Edith Grossman's of Cholera. I found Rabassa more poetic.

“He was still too young to know that the heart's memory eliminates the bad and magnifies the good, and that thanks to this artifice we manage to endure the burden of the past.”
― Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera
