I was just reading "Science", saw another article on "quantum computing", and blew my top. For I know there is no such thing.

The guy who told me "linear algebra in complex Hilbert space" shows there is such a thing must have thought that clever. But it proves people do not see the difference between PHYSICS and FORMALISM. The linear algebra is merely obfuscated probability theory, which physicists (rather insanely IMO) mistake for "entangled states"...

Exploring a new model for a Theory of Everything where properties like mass and spin emerge from a resonating fundamental field in a discrete vacuum. What are your initial impressions of this framework?

@johncarlosbaez as a kid in the eighties we went from having a TV that could either be in the state “on” or “off” to a new one (still very primitive by today’s standards but it had a remote control) and this introduced me to the concept of “standby”, at which point I realised nothing would ever be simple again

@drmakimber - yes, people can't resist making technology more complicated and 'moderniizing' it, even at the expense of proper functionality. For example there are still bad chairs: you'd think the problem of making a good chair would be solved by now, but people keep trying new designs, and many of them are bad.

Technology that uses electronics is infinitely more problematic.

So the ability to understand which technology we're using, tell if it's on or off, and turn it on or off, is not a privilege we have anymore.

@johncarlosbaez
The quote in the article introduced as "the person responding to my email wrote" is so mechanical that I question whether the journalist was really speaking to a human.
@priryo @johncarlosbaez For a while now it has been impossible to know whether you are interacting with a human or not, when dealing with any company. #butlerianjihadnow

@rossquantum @priryo @johncarlosbaez

As long as courts held the companies responsible on things they say while speaking on record, it doesn't really matter either way.

@rossquantum @priryo - I guess you've heard of the "dead internet theory", which claims that most supposed humans on the internet are fake.

"The dead Internet theory is a conspiracy theory that asserts, due to a coordinated and intentional effort, the Internet now consists mainly of bot activity and automatically generated content manipulated by algorithmic curation to control the population and minimize organic human activity. Proponents of the theory believe these social bots were created intentionally to help manipulate algorithms and boost search results in order to manipulate consumers. Some proponents of the theory accuse government agencies of using bots to manipulate public perception. The date given for this "death" is generally around 2016 or 2017."

Others think it's not dead yet, but is dying.

It's official: Gemini is now spyware.

Tuta have provided some guidance on how to uninstall Gemini, without 'rooting' the device.

@johncarlosbaez What's interesting, I never got such mail on my account. I do have "Google" app disabled as well as Google Assistant or Gemini app and my "history" has been disabled for all of it for years now. I'm running Samsung phone...

@rejzor @johncarlosbaez

If you have Samsung, you don't have Google Android, but Samsung's Android. Samsungs Android and apps have worse spyware situation than Google.

This is black mark for Google, but Google is still preferable to Samsung or Xiaomi from privacy and security standpoint.

@tinkel @johncarlosbaez I rather have some data leak to Samsung than to Google. It's why I bought Samsung in first place and prefer to use Samsung functions and services over Google's.

Also, Secure DNS with Hagezi Ultimate filtering saves.

@johncarlosbaez FAANG needs AI for as the current buzz to keep their "growth" classification as a stock.

So they will push AI into anything (expect AI powered Google cereal boxes), usually in a way where you produce as many as possible interactions, no matter if it improves your experience, and about as easy to get rid of as an antibiotics resistant STI.

And the Google C-level-ape next quarter in their investors call: Interactions with our Gemini AI have risen by 93%

Not mentioned: Most popular query, “How do I get rid of this Gemini crap?”

Nice high-growth numbers, not a lie in a legal sense, and if the users hate them, 🤷where will they go? To Apple Intelligence (same 💩even pricier, and in ways more exploitive of the users)?

While there are some odd phones, they are mostly not what I call “wife compatible” (stuff you can buy and give to my wife without getting it back travelling with high kinetic energy into the direction of my head)

Isn't an evil duopoly great? And Reagan made it so, that this considered a good thing in the USA.
@johncarlosbaez Wonder why the line breaks are so weird in this screenshot. Makes it look fake. :/

@johncarlosbaez

We need an open source alternative to corporate shiteware on smartfones, preferably a European model.

Allowing Google and Apple to steal everyone's data through their monopolies is condoning exploitation.

> preferably a European model

Right.

I should have read the European Union AI Act.
Now I can only ask myself how permitted that would be in the European Union...

@ReggieHere @johncarlosbaez

@johncarlosbaez

This makes sense (but is still misleading) if ‘Gemini Apps Activity’ and ‘Gemini for Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities’ are separate settings.

@johncarlosbaez

To be sure, I can't find either of those settings on my Android phone (a Samsung). Just a generic Gemini Settings which invites me to turn Gemini on. (Perhaps if I turned it on then I would see more options, but I'm not going to do that.)
