As a blind individual, I have to say that #Caturday on #Mastodon is far far more enjoyable then at #Twitter, where the vast majority of cat photos are not described.

It is also been fascinating for me to hear descriptions written by those who sent the image, immediately followed by Apple image recognition’s attempts to describe the same image. Only rarely does that add anything to the ALT, & often directly contradicts it.

There is no auto magical solution to image description. It is something best done by a human, for only that human can explain the “why” of the image: the reason that image was chosen to speak so eloquently without words for those who can see it. ALT allows you to provide those words.

In the era of Instagrammable urbanism, sometimes the simple, low-cost and functional gets under-rated. I’m a fan of this very simple seating that’s being rolled out by our local transit service at space-constrained, lower-volume local bus stops.

“We found that there’s this perfect one-to-one relationship. If a city increased its road capacity by 10%, then the amount of driving in that city went up by 10%.” One of the earliest, and still one of the best articles on why building bigger roads just leads to more driving. Call it #InducedDemand, or #JevonsParadox, or the #LawOfCongestion. Via WIRED, it’s worth a read and share.

What's Up With That: Building Bigger Roads Actually Makes Traffic Worse

The concept is called induced demand, which is economist-speak for when increasing the supply of something (like roads) makes people want that thing even more. Though some traffic engineers made note of this phenomenon at least as early as the 1960s, it is only in recent years that social scientists have collected enough data to show how this happens pretty much every time we build new roads.

The timing of the start of the sewer leak in #HamOnt comes shortly after the provincial gov't made major cuts to municipal infrastructure spending and downloaded many services to municipalities. Will province help offset the costs of the clean-up and the sewer audit?

One of the most important strategic policy decisions any city hall makes is passing a municipal budget. Hundreds of policy decisions are embedded in a #budget. What’s overfunded, what’s underfunded, what’s not funded at all.
You can find more truth in a city’s budget that in any vision statement or council-approved goal statement. Too many cities have budgets and visions that are completely inconsistent, or at best, not consistent enough.
