The whole cancel culture “debate” is basically: there are a bunch of relatively comfortable, affluent people who had gotten used to thinking of themselves as “good” people because they aren’t actively violent to groups they feel superior to. Members of those groups suggested that more might be required of them than just not going out of their way to be terrible. They LOST THEIR COLLECTIVE SHIT. So now it’s a debate.

“There’s no scenario in which life outside Horizon will be good for UK science”: reactions in @guardian from me & others to to the latest Plan B “go it alone” grandstanding by UK ministers.

“The simple fact is that #science in Britain is in a weaker position because of #Brexit. This has been compounded by the general Tory-linked disdain for ‘experts’, public sector employees and poor management of the economy.” —Devi Sridhar #BrexitReality https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/feb/09/science-cabinet-seat-britain-research-brexit-rishi-sunak
After Brexit, if Sunak really wants a ‘science superpower’, he must fix these three things

Science now has a cabinet seat, but Britain’s world-leading reputation is fading fast, says public health professor Devi Sridhar

We have layoffs for exactly the same reason we have homelessness. Both are expensive, harmful, and unnecessary. Both are sustained anyway because capitalism requires that work is compulsory. Both exist to be used as a threat to compel work and deference from workers.

So, I don't know. Keep writing papers and articles about the real effects of layoffs, I guess. But please understand that you'll never convince boards and CEOs to stop doing them, because the harm of layoffs is the desired outcome. So make your audience the people who've been taken in by their lies, and the people who should be protecting us from them.

Even though I know nothing about it, I can predict the outcome of the game. Please see the graphic.

I ask these because most admins/mods claim to be Leftists/progressive. So then, show us where you stand.

Society drills into us that humans only have worth if we:
1. Work and "earn" our keep
2. "don't rely on" others
3. Those in need are unworthy of survival

These things were created for capitalism to alienate us from bonds of community, so we don't rise up to tear it down and build anew. All three are false.

Mutual aid breaks that alienation. It's essential to our liberation.

Support it.
