Rodney King suffered a fractured skull and cheekbone after being beaten by 4 Los Angeles, CA police officers, who were charged with a number of offenses. Many Angelenos felt certain of a conviction. After all, there was irrefutable proof in the form of a video captured by George Holliday, then, blasted across the airwaves. Wrong! Not guilty!
3 hours later, Los Angeles was in flames.

Today in Labor History August 26, 1913: The Dublin lock-out began, a 5- month strike over terrible living and working conditions, and for union recognition. At the time, some Irish workers were living with 55 people per house. The Infant mortality rate among the poor was 142 per 1,000 births. TB-related deaths were 50% higher than in England or Scotland. The main organizers of the strike were 2 syndicalists, James Larkin and IWW cofounder, James Connolly. Several workers were killed by police and by strikebreakers. Hundreds were injured. WB Yeats’ poem, September 1913, is often viewed as a commentary on the brutality of the strike. Connolly was later executed as a leader of the Easter Rising, in 1916.

NEW TRAIL GUIDE: Mount Donyan (東眼山)
This beautiful trail in Taoyuan’s Fuxing District takes you up to the summit of Mount Dongyan via some incredibly pretty forest footpaths.

🧭 A little under 4km.
🕒 2½ to 3½ hours. I spent a little over three hours on this trail, but stopped quite a lot to enjoy the quiet.
🚶♀️3/10 difficulty level for regular Taiwan hiker. Some elevation gain, but getting to the park will be the biggest hurdle for most people.
🚶♀️4-5/10 difficulty level for a new Taiwan hiker. For elevation gain, uneven (sometimes slippery surfaces), and the challenge of making your way to the park.
⛰ Almost 300 metres.
💦 I was fine with just 0.5L on a cool autumn day. There’s a hot and cold water dispenser at the starting/ending point of the trail, so it’s easy to top up is if you run out.
☀️ This walk is shaded more or less from start to finish.
☎️ Mobile coverage here is pretty clear the whole way.
🥰 As well being able to tick one of the Xiao Bai Yue off of your list, this is a lovely walk in its own right. Even if you don’t get to enjoy the view at the top, the forest scenery is top-class.
🧣It’s worth noting that due to its elevation, the weather in the park is generally quite a bit cooler than the weather in the cities. Check the local forecast before you go and plan accordingly.
📄 No permit required, but there is an entry fee to visit the park.
🚌This route is accessible by public transport. (Details included in the full blog.)

Charles Darwin first publishes his theory of evolution through natural selection in The Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London, alongside Alfred Russel Wallace's same theory #OTD in 1858.
Darwin emphasised competition between individuals of the same species to survive & reproduce, whereas Wallace emphasised environmental pressures on varieties & species forcing them to become adapted to their local conditions, leading populations in different locations to diverge.

“Allina clinicians say they’re looking for a greater voice in the operations of their clinics and a union will give them the power to push back against the “corporatization” of health care.” #minnesota #healthcare #union #labor #allinahealth
More than 550 doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants across Allina’s 61 primary and urgent care clinics in Minnesota and Wisconsin could form the nation’s largest private sector union of clinicians. Over 60% of Allina primary and urgent care clinicians signed onto a petition filed with federal labor regulators on Friday to hold a union […]
