Is the fediverse about to get Fryed? (Or, “Why every toot is also a potential denial of service attack”)

Every time I post something that gets lots of engagement, I essentially end up carrying out a denial of service attack on myself. What does this say about the design of Mastodon and ActivityPub and the future of the fediverse?

There are currently some hiccups with the official iOS app's push notification service, I am investigating. It has never seen so much activity before. #devops

What happens when you have your own Mastodon instance (just for you) where over 21,000 people follow you and when you’re following over 4,300 people?

You end up paying ~€50/month for Mastodon hosting 👀

It also opens up interesting questions: what happens when a popular account joins your instance (hint: it will probably cost the instance maintainers quite a bit… I don’t envy the mastodon.nu folks right now).

Some people think Mastodon is too weird to become popular:

I joined Twitter in 2008. We had to put a "d" in front of a tweet to convert it to a direct message and every other day you had some embarrassing private moments exposed because someone forgot about the “d”. Hashtags were just a community hack, introduced by Chris Messina to somehow tag content. Search? Hah, you wish! Tweets via SMS were supposed to be a thing. Oh, and the daily meet and greet with the failwhale. Totally not weird.

After years of Mastodon being, well, boring, I got a bit trigger-happy following lots of new incoming folks and I've already created a river for myself that I can never drink.

But that's OK. Any microblogging format where many people are firing off ideas into the universe will always be like that, and I can be content just taking an inspirational dip here now and then.

For me, proper messaging (eg Matrix chat) is still going to be where serious work and news gets done.

Kia ora. By ways of introduction, #Mahara is an #OpenSource #Portfolio / #ePorfolio platform. The main development team is located in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand and has been there since the project started in mid 2006.

This account is maintained at the moment by @anitsirk who is the project lead and product manager, supporting a great team of contributors of various skills that shape this #EdTech tool.
