We are looking for a scientist with a PhD in life sciences, preferably biochemistry or zoology, to co-author a manuscript on semiochemical communication by cats.

While there is no need to lead the (ongoing) project, there is ample opportunity to make a significant contribution (e.g., first authorship). 1/2

❝ But I just use AI for boilerplate!" you whimper, clutching your Co-Pilot subscription. Listen to yourself. If you’re writing the same boilerplate every day like some industrial-age cog monkey, automate it yourself. Write a library. Invent a macro. Reclaim some dignity. If AI’s doing your "boring parts", what exactly is left for you to do? Fidget with sliders? Paint by numbers while the inference works it's magic? ❞

I admit I have better things to do this morning than read this, but it's brilliantly funny and soooooo refreshingly on point: https://deplet.ing/the-copilot-delusion/. #LLM #CoPilot #Programming

Announcing: https://justaqrcode.com.

Tired of "free" QR code generators that are full of ads and trackers, that share your data, and that want to sell you something? Me too. Here's my act of resistance: I made a one-page site that works entirely in your browser to generate a simple QR code. And that's all it does. You can download the HTML page and run it locally, even. Read the source; nothing up my sleeves. Just a QR code.

My offer to you -- I will continue to pay for the domain name and web hosting for it, myself. If you find it valuable, you can pay it back by creating your own useful thing for the world and releasing it for free. Let's take back the friendly web, one vexingly-monetized utility at a time!

We train scientists at all levels to get the most out of publicly available biological data.

I am launching a broad call for finding an ecology and/or evolution society that could take ecoevo.social under its wings.
While I am very happy to continue managing the technical and community aspect of this server, I do not have the bandwidth to start looking into taxes and non-profit creation issues.

"How disruptive would it be if GitHub started deleting repositories, or Google Scholar started hiding certain papers in response to U.S. government demands?"

https://www.thetransmitter.org/policy/science-must-step-away-from-nationally-managed-infrastructure/

Most people with some interest have seen precisely this coming for more than a decade. @neuralreckoning is among them. It's great that outlets like @thetransmitter are now also recognizing this problem and are helping to amplify these voices.

Science must step away from nationally managed infrastructure

Scientific data and independence are at risk. We need to work with community-driven services and university libraries to create new multi-country organizations that are resilient to political interference.

The Transmitter: Neuroscience News and Perspectives

You know why we Germans are so pedantic about data protection? Someone around 90 years ago went through all records available, selected people with certain criteria, with the help of IBM, and then killed them all.

We don't want to be on any list.

And now the US Gov and Musk are trying to get access to all data they have about every person and put them into a big fat DB and run AI over it.

I am afraid what they will do with that.

Trump has free rein over Dutch government data. "The Netherlands relies heavily on American IT service providers such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon for the storage of government data." - I bet the UK does, too. And many others.
