Emergency service volunteer. #books #podcasts #knitting #crochet #sewing

Settling down for the night with the #novella “Helpmeet” by Naben Ruthnum. I’ve been on a bit of a #weirdfiction tear lately and looking forward to this.

EDIT- post-read: a very quick read! Lots of body horror, but strangely touching? 3.75

I'll probably toot (are we still calling it that?) similar things, namely:
- #books I'm #reading
- stuff I'm making (incl. #knitting #crochet #sewing #repair)
- #music I'm enjoying
- stories from volunteer land
- stuff I care about like #slowfashion #equality the #environment and #classjustice
Been missing how Twitter used to be so back here. Still same me, just a little older.

Working on a jumper made out of #WoolAndTheGang #NewWaveYarn recycled polyester yarn (proving, once again, that I am all over everything New Wave). Each ball contains the equivalent of about three plastic bottles saved from the ocean.

This is a photo from earlier in the project, back when I was just mindlessly knitting away in stockinette. I’m up to the moss stitch section now. For people who make entire projects out of moss stitch: (a) how? (b) why?

Siri just tried to pronounce ABC (the broadcaster) as Abecquel, like an obscure unit of measurement for radiation.

Oddly specific book recommendation request coming at you: #JapaneseFiction from the 80s and 90s. I want to feel what I felt when I read Banana Yoshimoto for the first time.

I’ve already got the newly translated Izumi Suzuki collection on my list.

I’m sure there will be attribution studies to come, but it’s widely accepted that global heating is leading to less frequent but more severe tropical cyclones. Which is probably irreversible and sucks, in short.

Overnight, #CycloneIlsa set a ten minute sustained wind speed record of 218km/h. That’s the hardest the wind has ever blown (and been recorded) ever in Australia.

Cyclone Ilsa hits Western Australia coast after setting wind speed record of 218km/h

The storm made landfall about 140km from Port Hedland where residents were ‘on edge’, according to mayor Peter Carter

This evening’s satellite picture of Severe Tropical Cyclone #Ilsa near Western Australia. Wind speed over 240 km/h, pressure 929 hPa. #CycloneIlsa #weather #WX

It’s been ten years since a Category 4 made landfall in that part of the country. I wonder how long it’s been since a Cat 5.

Cyclone Ilsa expected to become category 5 system before hitting Western Australia coast https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/apr/13/cyclone-ilsa-western-australia-intensifies-to-category-4-wa-coast-port-hedland?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
