50 years in filesystems

16.08.2025 10:00–11:00, HS 1/2

https://programm.froscon.org/froscon2025/talk/42d5d1ea-8ca1-45e6-9545-717d90268f4d/

Writing data to disk, how hard can it be? File systems are a special topic, because when you make a mistake, somebody is losing data and rollback ain't gonna fix it.

We have had innovations in filesystems roughly in intervals of a decade for the last 50 years. What have we learned, what has changed due to changes in technology, and where are we now?

Proposal in EN, Vortrag in DE, ich weiß.

has anyone ever come across a video documentary about CorelDraw! and the Corel corporation? it's eluding me on web/yt searches, and *someone* must have done a deep dive on this by now?

@headcr45h @anathem @fluepke

Ich weiß nicht ob die Fräse als Belagerungswaffe zählt, aber richtig justiert kann sowas auch weit werfen, vor allem wenn es teure Geräusche dabei macht

Schön war’s!

@vga256

Very interested. It would give me closure or something. I had to teach that thing.

@vga256

I'm older than I look...

@angelastella @vga256 Here's something tangentially related to this. But given the WordPerfect–Correl merger, it might be of interest to folk who want yo know about the history of Correl.

Pete Peterson, who was the CEO of WordPerfect, has published an in-depth firsthand history of the company: http://www.wordplace.com/ap/
Almost Perfect by W. E. Pete Peterson The Rise and Fall of WordPerfect Corporation

Almost Perfect by W. E. Pete Peterson - The Rise and Fall of WordPerfect Corporation. Mr. Peterson gives his account of experiences as WordPerfect's Executive Vice President.

@aj @angelastella

Interesting to see so much about the OS/2-Windows conflict there. I was an OS/2 system UI developer with IBM in Boca Raton back in the late 80s and early 90s. WordPerfect recruited a lot of our team to go to Utah and work on their suite. I got an offer there and seriously considered it, but I didn't feel ready to live in Provo.

OS/2 and WordPerfect pretty much died together. IBM didn't seem to know how to market the OS, and I guess their commitment to it was a maladaptation for WP.

@dhobern @aj @vga256

Technical people (myself included back then) couldn't understand why a system needed to be "marketed". OS/2 was objectively superior, right?

Mistakes were made and feelings were hurt. No one really learned anything. No one ever does.

@angelastella @dhobern @vga256 It really is amazing how DOS/Windows couldn't lay a glove on many of the alternatives in terms of technical merit.

OS/2, Macintosh, Amiga, Atari ST, Acorn Archimedes, Solaris, NeXTSTEP, and Silicon Graphics were all technically superior platforms in various ways.

Yet Windows ended up coming out on top.

@aj @dhobern @vga256

Political systems don't win or lose on the basis of merit either. (Cue Clausewitz...)

@aj @angelastella @dhobern @vga256 What came on top was Windows NT. A completely different system with an actual technical merit.
@scrutinizer @aj @angelastella @dhobern @vga256 Depends on where you locate the top. Arguably Android, also with the actual technical merit of being Linux based. But enshittification spares no one.
@angelastella @dhobern @aj @vga256 exactly that’s why OSes (and everything else!) „needs“ marketing (from a producers view). To push the inferior product! VHS anyone?
Marketing in general is „don’t watch too closely what the product is. It’s cool!!“
@beejay @angelastella @dhobern @aj @vga256 and marketing of a software is not easy, marketing of an OS even harder (but I think Zorin OS is doing a good job, appealing web site is not so common).
@dhobern @aj @angelastella Kindly remove me from your CC chain.
@aj wow! interesting book - thank you.
@vga256 I would also like to know if anyone finds one. CorelDraw was the first major art package I used on the PC, lots of fond memories!
@vga256 horrific traumatic memories of using it professionally in the DTP department at a large printshop ::shudder::
@vga256 I recently learned that Corel was maintaining their own official Corel LinuxOS distro. I only knew them for Corel Draw...
@rejzor @vga256 Not only their Linux distro, but also their Linux computer

@vga256 when I was young we had this in our PC and I had no clue how it worked. I was used to „draw“ in MS paint, but could not figure out, how to use Corel draw. „Wtf how am I supposed to draaaaaw something?“
@vga256 I've never seen a documentary on them, but I have used it from #Coreldraw v5 to the current version. It's still my daily driver!
@vga256 I would watch the heck out of a video like that

@vga256 I used CorelDRAW extensively in the late 90s & early 2000s for both web & print graphics. I still have memories of wrangling with local print shops who *hated* the files I brought them and the fact I wasn't using, y'know, Adobe and Quark like everyone else in print. 😅

I'll actually defend Corel Photo-Paint from that era over Photoshop 'till my dying day. A lot of UX improvements which came later on in Photoshop were in Photo-Paint first!

@jaredwhite 😆 love it. i am always fascinated how CorelDraw was *so* polarizing. i was blown away by Pantone support back in 90-91!
@vga256 Ah, that brings back memories. I still keep using the 2021 version, but I never really got into it as a teen. It's a great programme, but like all vector stuff it needs quite some effort to produce something worthwhile.
@blind_mapmaker yes. i can say 100% that as a kid, it was intimidating to build vector art with. i ended up becoming a raster/photoshop user for that reason

@vga256
It totally get that. It was a monster back than and didn't run very smoothly either.

I find that as I'm somebody with very little artistic ability it helps me a lot to make visually pleasing comic-style stuff. Never really managed to draw with mouse or tablet and the real-life pencil and brush stuff I did was strictly grade-school level. Corel draw adds a layer of numbers that I can grasp far better than raster stuff.

@blind_mapmaker totally agree. i returned to vector art later in life, and *really* learned to appreciate how flexible and user-friendly it was to work with shapes
@vga256 I feel a little compelled to make such a video documentary. If only I could find time to do so in my already busy schedule. Perhaps one day. I'm quite passionate about old art programs. Something about them seems charming.
