Belafonte "provided money to bail Dr. King and other civil rights activists out of jail. He took part in the March on Washington in 1963. His spacious apartment on West End Avenue in Manhattan became Dr. King’s home away from home. And he quietly maintained an insurance policy on Dr. King’s life, with his family as the beneficiary, and donated his own money to make sure the family was taken care of after Dr. King was assassinated in 1968."

In the 1950s, when segregation was still widespread, his ascent to the upper echelon of show business was historic. But his primary focus was civil rights.

Opinion | Republicans Did Something Most People Don’t Like, So They’re Changing the Rules

The party has opened fronts in the war for minority rule.

Okay, today’s photo is from Honolulu. It’s an old, rotting VW van. I took with a Leica M10-D and the M-Hexanon 50mm lens. Besides the color and composition, what I like is that the total lack of adornment on the van suggests possibility, like an open canvas.

Editing wise the way the light hit I didn’t have to worry so much about lifting shadows on the van. But I did create a mask for the background to life some of those shadows. I also touched up the green a bit.

I wrote about Greg Abbott's promise to pardon a man who was inspired by Donald Trump to kill a Black Lives Matter protester, the Republican Party's embrace of political violence, and the news media's perverse insistence on portraying them as "tough on crime" despite all this.

Republican politicians embrace another killer

It's time for the news media to start accurately portraying the GOP as objectively pro-crime

Finding Gravity

A really common way the news media justifies bad Republican behavior is by pretending it is analogous to, and thus in some way justified by, things that it in fact is in no way analogous to.

Indicting a *former* president for *illegal hush money payments* is simply nothing like indicting a *sitting* president over a *policy dispute,* but the New York Times pretends it is.

Time for a proper #Introduction:

I'm a #healthcare policy analyst, advocate and blogger who focuses primarily on the #ACA (#AffordableCareAct), but I also write about #Medicaid, #CHIP and a lot of other U.S. healthcare system stuff. Last year I also gained some attention for #COVID19 data analysis.

During election season I also raise money online for #Democratic candidates.

To understand the horrendous volume of mass shootings in the U.S., it is imperative to appreciate how the expiration of the last federal assault weapons ban freed gun manufacturers to push AR-15s into common usage. Here’s gift access to recent reporting on this, published in today’s Washington Post before the episode in #Nashville. https://wapo.st/40lZWh4 1/ (short thread) #GunViolence #GunIndustry
How the AR-15 became a powerful political, cultural symbol in America

The AR-15 wasn’t supposed to be a best-seller. It's the result of a dramatic shift in American gun culture fueled by the firearms industry and its allies.

Worried about TikTok? Then pass comprehensive consumer data privacy legislation. By reducing the massive stores of personal data collected by all businesses, we will reduce opportunities for all governments to buy or steal this data. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/03/government-hasnt-justified-tiktok-ban
Government Hasn't Justified a TikTok Ban

Freedom of speech and association include the right to choose one’s communication technologies. Politicians shouldn’t be able to tell you what to say, where to say it, or who to say it to.So we are troubled by growing demands in the United States for restrictions on TikTok, a technology that many...
