To understand the horrendous volume of mass shootings in the U.S., it is imperative to appreciate how the expiration of the last federal assault weapons ban freed gun manufacturers to push AR-15s into common usage. Here’s gift access to recent reporting on this, published in today’s Washington Post before the episode in #Nashville. https://wapo.st/40lZWh4 1/ (short thread) #GunViolence #GunIndustry
How the AR-15 became a powerful political, cultural symbol in America

The AR-15 wasn’t supposed to be a best-seller. It's the result of a dramatic shift in American gun culture fueled by the firearms industry and its allies.

The Washington Post
Meanwhile, the current Supreme Court continues its radical reinterpretation of the Second Amendment in ways that will make it harder for Congress and state legislatures to ban or otherwise regulate the sale of semiautomatic rifles and revolvers and the accessories used to heighten their lethality. 2/
Furthermore, gun manufacturers and the groups that lobby and litigate on their behalf are aiming to further throttle civil accountability by arguing that violations of public nuisance laws may not be used as a basis to bring some lawsuits within a clear exception to the otherwise broad ban, implemented by #PLCAA, on suits against gun manufacturers who cause mass murders by marketing their guns to civilians particularly likely to use them to commit this sort of violence. 3/
I’ve very quickly sketched how the gun industry and gun zealots have attempted, with great success, to put the gun industry beyond the reach of law. There is nothing in American history or legal precedent that justifies this utterly bizarre situation. 4/4 #LawFedi #GunViolence #2A #PublicNuisance #PLCAA
@heidilifeldman Thank you for sharing this article. It was enlightening and horrifying. We suffered a brutal school shooting in Scotland two decades ago and gun ownership was wiped out almost overnight. It is disgusting that corporations put profit above the lives of innocent children.
@heidilifeldman here’s an idea, remove the acronym AR and use assault rifle, that way it’s much better to understand it’s not a tool to defend your home under some archaic amendment, but a weapon of assault…,,,
@jaycee @heidilifeldman
And anyone who wants to gunsplain that the 'AR' actually stands for ARmalite can go and shite.
@dec23k @heidilifeldman absolutely! As can anyone who opines that the founding father’s amendments are sacrosanct! The second amendment was made before anyone could imagine an assault rifle or that mass shootings of school children would be a weekly occurrence!! They’d be bloody horrified!

@jaycee @heidilifeldman
My country's history was shaped by the AR-18 during the 1970s and 1980s, but they were only ever called "Armalites" when they made the news.

My country's constitution has had 38 amendments since 1939.
I have read all of them, and I helped to get one of them repealed.

The clue is in the name: it's an amendment.

@heidilifeldman Absolutely horrifying. The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with the political bravery to repeal the second amendment.
@firepoet @heidilifeldman
Bad guys don't follow the rules. Seriously. Limiting lobby payouts -- in their various forms that directly support politicians -- is what needs fixing. Assuming we want to keep the spirit of the Constitution that makes the USA unique amongst nations. My $0.02.
@firepoet @heidilifeldman
Or Amend the Amendment to provde for mandatory pre-purchase licenture, insurance, background, and mental tests.
@PensiveTM @heidilifeldman Well.. really.. what value do we get out of it?
@heidilifeldman The well regulated militia is not as well regulated as it pretends to be.

@heidilifeldman

Back in the 1980s I wrote much of the British Medical Association's iconic report "Selection of Casualties for Treatment after Nuclear Attack". As part of the research for it, I learnt about peculiarly nasty weapons (there was a technical term for this which I no longer remember).

I was surprised to discover that the standard infantry rifle, ie AR-15, was classified as peculiarly nasty. 1/n

@heidilifeldman

The reason for this classification is that the bullet speed induces an effect known as "cavitation". In essence, it creates a shock wave within the human body that can turn tissue into mush. This'll kill you even if the shot doesn't pass through any vital organ.

There is no legitimate civilian use for these horrible weapons of war.

Thankfully here in the UK we have sensible gun control legislation. 2/2

@heidilifeldman For a man in a low income job with absolutely little to no autonomy owning a gun like an #ar15 gives him an unlimited sense of power. It’s a con game. While he’s satisfied he can prevent his house from being robbed, #gop , #nra, #kleptocrats, bankers & #bigbusiness are robbing him blind & #foxnews makes sure he blames the poor instead.

@heidilifeldman thank you for sharing this. It’s hard to wrap my head around how money is more important than lives to the manufacturers of these military weapons for mass destruction.
