@jasonekratz @kev Edge and Brave rely on the Chromium project as their base. If Chromium were to die, they would eventually follow or have to rebase off Firefox (or create their own engine) otherwise they'd become outdated and insecure. Reading that paragraph and missing the part where it was said that Safari is reliant on Google? It says they are paid for Google to be the default search engine, that's not the same thing. I think the point they are trying to make is that basically all browsers are tied to and funded by companies. A new fully open sourced browser and engine that avoids all of these things is a good thing. Ladybird just came to mind when reading the post. Not sure if there are any other similar projects being developed.
