I want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly: If you switch Mastodon instances, it's easy to transfer your network/follows over (I did this), but NOT your content. Is this right? If you change instances you can't move your toots to the new one?

This makes the "don't be held hostage by a platform!" benefit less compelling doesn't it? Like what if someone just doesn't pay the bill for your instance? All your content's gone?

Am I missing something?

Hannah Zagel, Sabine Hübgen, and I argue that demography can only effectively be invoked as explanation of trends in poverty with a distinction between the composition of risk factors and their associated penalties for poverty.

We apply this insight to explain the unexpected and diverging trends in single-mother poverty in Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Diverging Trends in Single-Mother Poverty across Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom: Toward a Comprehensive Explanatory Framework

#MastodonTips If you're a new user of #Mastodon, you should take a look at the "Hotkeys" in the "Getting started" footer.

Lots of handy shortcuts here, like (among a few dozen):

- r: reply to post
- p: open author's profile
- b: boost post
- backspace: navigate back
- s: focus search bar
- ?: display hotkeys legend

This is a recreation of a Twitter thread of my response to someone who said re: scientists moving to Mastodon: "Leaving the global community to enter a silo makes no sense."

I think this represents a common misconception about Mastodon! The entire point of federated social media is that it isn't a silo. On Twitter you are in a Twitter silo. On a Mastodon instance you can interact with anyone on ANY instance.

The important thing: #FediFinder is back!

While https://fedifinder.glitch.me seems to work fine again, I added two backups that you can use as well:
https://fedifinder-backup.glitch.me and https://fedifinder-backup2.glitch.me

New feature: You can now click on the usernames for the fediverse (may not always work because of different formats of software) and Twitter.

Fediverse accounts of your X/Twitter followings

Hello everyone, thanks to those of you who followed me as I migrated my old Mastodon account (of several years!) from mastodon.xyz to scholar.social. There is a really great community here but I'm moving over to a new account:

@konrad

If Mastodon's wonderful migrate feature works smoothly I think many (most? all?) followers will get transferred over or have otion to. All my old toots stay safely on the frozen account here. I’ll post reasons below. 1/

#instancemigration

I don't think Mastodon or the fediverse has ever received this much attention before. It's a great opportunity for people to finally see that social media can be done differently, that it can be a protocol not under control of any single company.
Wow! @SocArXivBot is now tooting new SocArXiv papers. Much gratitude to @lakens for launching it.

I really appreciated learning about new books on Twitter. There’s a #newbooks hashtag here. Also looks like some folks have been posting about the #newbooksnetwork too!

For those interested in sociology or law books, here are some possible hashtags we could use:

#newsocbooks (for sociology)
#newlawbooks (for law)

#sociology #lawprofs

Elon Musk: Maximale Zerstörungsfreiheit

Elon Musk hat Twitters halbe Belegschaft gefeuert. Nun hat er sein unbeschränktes Sprachrohr. Für politische Debatten kann das gefährlich werden. Gerade vor den Midterms.
