#OnThisDay, John Harris died in Frome in 1940. His wife, Alice Seeley Harris, had lived in #Frome as a teenager. Pictured is Frome in 1891.

They travelled to the #Congo as missionaries and discovered Belgian men committing crimes against humanity towards Congolese people, making them work as slaves to collect rubber. Horrified, Alice documented the atrocities by taking photos. This eventually helped spark change in the Congo.

On this day in 871, Alfred the Great became King of Wessex with his wife, Elswitha, by his side. They would undergo many upheavals, the lowest point being their wandering through the Somerset Levels when she was in her mid- to late twenties.
