Just read an interesting thread on Twitter by @lewis_e_atkin about the benefits or otherwise of "chop & drop" when cutting borders. "You directly recycle nutrients and organic matter as well as creating habitat for predictors"

I've never heard of this, although I leave cutting the border until late Winter to give protection and food to nature.

@Egbert We feed our birds through winter to help them. To be responsible for their death is a nightmare. Mesh bags containing fat balls are deathtraps +should be banned! Fat ball Coil Spring feeders also trap + kill our feathered friends +should not be used. A young girl, keen to help, was mortified when she found this poor bird. The coil expands slightly as the fat balls are placed inside.
Birds eagerly feeding on the balls are unaware that the coil is beginning to slowly contract + trap them

There is more to this shot than meets the eye, and it’s bad news for the hawk.
This urban wild hawk had learned to catch mice from poison bait boxes in a supermarket parking lot. Poisoned disoriented mice are easy prey. Secondary rodenticide poisoning is a big issue in the US. It kills large amounts of predators that feed on poisoned rodents. One of my favourite animals, a Mountain Hare. These beautiful creatures inhabit the mountainous regions of Scotland and Northern England.

In Winter I take guests to photograph the hares in the highlands of Scotland. With patience we can usually get within 10 m for photographs like this. It is all about respect for the animal, huddled in their ‘forms’ on the bleak, freezing mountainside.
