Not many flowers left in the garden now after a couple of nights of overnight temperatures of 2 degrees. The calendula has always been a great one over winter (in a sheltered spot), but this nasturtium flower has been there for 3 days now and still looking fresh and perky.

There is lots said about the value of ivy and keeping it over the Autumn/early Winter, because of the wonderful flowers and the use for late flying pollinators.

But I'm always amazed about the beautiful flowers of the Fatsia, which this year seem to be more beautiful than ever in my garden. They are very similar to the ivy flowers and a magnet for hoverflies at the moment.

One can't visit the Isle of Purbeck without stopping at Corfe Castle. The extra treat are the Herdwicks grazing on the slopes of the castle.

Our wonderful weekend on the Isle of Purbeck is over.

We stayed at the Purbeck House Hotel in Swanage. We always use this stately place when staying in Swanage. It's tired and faded, but architecturally interesting with deep red plush carpets up the stairs & stained glass windows. If you stay, ask for room 7 - it's so roomy & comfortable. Don't go if you're only interested in cold modern accommodation, but if you like interesting, old fashioned comfort, give it a try.

The weather in Swanage was absolutely beautiful today. I adore this place. It's a little stuck in the past, but in a good way. With views like this, who would want to be anywhere else?

I visit Studland Bay in Dorset regularly, as it's one of my favourite places. This visit I came across something new; a beach sauna, where you heat yourselves up in the little sauna hut & then periodically plunge into the icy waters of the Channel. There were even some brave ladies in there & yes, they did go into the sea. The air temp today was 11 degrees. To be fair, this beach was recently found to be the 4th warmest in the UK, but still......

There has been so much rain recently, causing the border to be damp and soggy, that the seeds left in situ in the echinacea seedheads that I left out for the birds, are germinating. You can bet if I'd gathered the seeds and tried to get them to germinate, nothing would have happened!

I've been spending time in the sunshine in the garden planting crocuses everywhere, in the desperate hope of a little bit of colourful cheer appearing from February next year.

What made me feel even better was discovering that there are already shoots appearing from those planted in previous years. I think that's the earliest I've ever seen shoots in my garden.

Oh - and a beautiful red admiral joined me for a short while, which was nice 🦋

Sadly I have no idea which geum this is, but it's been such a fantastic plant through all that this year's weather could throw at it. It's flowered through rain, wind, drought and now the occasional slight frost - and still it has buds. It's looking a bit soggy this morning after another drenching, but it's still beautiful.
