@john_cotter when you see the protests from the Iranian team - which could literally mean life or death for them and their families - the caving of the Western European teams seems a little pathetic.

I have enjoyed the careful technological and cultural comparisons between #Twitter and #Mastodon but what stands out for me is that the latter is not owned by a billionaire tweeting out abject and self- aggrandising nonsense to a horde of adoring cult followers whilst summarily terminating the employment of the very people who kept the site working and bearable. #Twexit
@davidallengreen@rbreich no one person can create that amount of wealth no matter how good they are at what they do - but a combination of government policy and markets working to their mutual interests allow wealth to be concentrated rather than distributed based on contribution. I think it is about power - those who want it don’t tend to act for the benefit of the whole., but it’s also insecurity - hold people back in case they are better than you.
The internet wasn't intended to be 3 websites with enough power to turn us into doomscrolling zombies, sway public policy and lead to the collapse of democracy.
