Mastodon, it's really simple.
You want everyone to leave the dodgy car salesman's X-hole?
You want a future where social media is community-owned and decentralised, instead of a corporate surveillance sphere?
Well, those things won't happen until Black Twitter migrates here.
And Black Twitter won't touch this place until there's proper moderation in place.
The issues raised by Mekka, Timnit, Kim, Sam, and others are not a peripheral issue.
Fixing moderation is absolutely central, core work that is mission critical for the Fedi being successful.
And if you don't do it, then please don't complain when (not if) everyone leaves for BlueSky.
EDIT: In terms of the kind of moderation tools that are needed, take a look at this post by Mekka: https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/112860109548583248
@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Today: At a minimum you should roll your own shared blocklist strategy. Read docs by @[email protected] or @[email protected] You should then develop your own process for merging and updating these blocklists with your own. Pain. And you will still get it wrong. It's too hard. Tomorrow: You should be able to go to your Mastodon config, and subscribe to a series of auto-updating blocklists from sources that you trust. These should be combined with your own blocklist.
For all #obsidian users: A little script for serendipitous moments.
"Basically, if a file on your computer can only be opened by a specific piece of software, and that software is controlled by a single company, you should probably export it to an open format. It's the only way to future-proof it."
You don't say 🤷
Some time ago, I was able to restore about 3 years (2004 onwards) worth of personal notes from a backup on CD-ROM, because the notes were stored as plain text files by my personal wiki back then. They now reside in my #pkm tool.
