Some time ago, I was able to restore about 3 years (2004 onwards) worth of personal notes from a backup on CD-ROM, because the notes were stored as plain text files by my personal wiki back then. They now reside in my #pkm tool.

How do you do that.

I stored and lost digital #photos

* in programs (and their proprietary format) that don't exist anymore today
* on DAT tapes
* on DVD-RAM where someone promised me 100 years
* on USB sticks
* on USB hard drives
* on image services on the internet
* on CF-Cards
* on SD-Cards

and this way i have lost Pictures that today i really miss.
