Direct messages (DMs) on #Mastodon / #ActivityPub / the #fediverse are not end-to-end encrypted (#e2ee) and you should never include sensitive/private information in them.

Until they are e2ee, this is all we should be telling people. Anything else is irresponsible and could cause vulnerable people harm.

Specifically, it doesn’t matter:

- if your instance admin is ethical or not
- whether Elon Musk can read DMs easier on Twitter
- etc.

It’s not end-to-end encrypted. It’s not private. End of.

It has dawned on me lately that white women quite often fill the position of a patriarchal "middle management" forming a human layer between the men at the top of white supremacist, cishetero-patriarchy and everyone else.

They run interference for white men with more power, expecting protection and a smaller slice of power for themselves.

As the public facing, middle-people of the hierarchy, white femininity serves to coat an abjectly violent system in a (false) non-threatening veneer.

One suggestion: If you want the fedi to be a welcoming place, don't jump in to someone's mentions to explain the fedi UNLESS explicitly asked to do so.

But nothing. This place will survive a little technical misunderstanding or misstatement.

It will not survive newcomers being bombarded with endless fedisplaining.
