You know how Mastodon skews older and tech-savvy? Well, I'm a Software Engineer who still thinks the 90s were just a couple of years ago :)
welp, I got laid off.
if anyone you know is looking for a slightly-used computational linguist -- remote or in #Syracuse, NY -- get in touch. I'm also open to "data science" positions if they're "languagey" #GetFediHired #NLProc #NLP
For #JukeboxFridayNight29May2026 let's swing to #AllThatJazz in honour of Miles Davis, born 26 May 1926, and Sonny Rollins, died 25 May 2026.
Any forms of jazz music or singing or jazz inspired styles are fine. That includes bossa nova (jazz aligned samba) and swing and blues, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation, and brass instruments and horns.

Hello, people!
For this #ThursdayFiveList we'll pause electric guitars a bit for acoustic ones.
All kind of acoustic tracks are allowed: full songs, intros, outros, instrumental breaks (not in the middle of a song, but as standalone tracks)… free for all.
Let's ride the #AcousticGuitarsWave

Hey Fedi, I'm curious, where does the distinction between arcane n divine magic (i.e. mages and clerics) originate from? Was't DnD, or sth that predates it?
A lotta fantasy staples can be traced back'a Tolkien's works, but the wizards there all had religious significance (they were Maiar, effectively low-ranking angels), so I don't think the arcane/divine dichotomy was already present there (the magic was often less concrete n more mystical anyway). But a lotta modern fantasy works, notably DnD, various RPGs n RPG-inspired anime etc. have such a distinction. So, what was the first thing that introduced't?
(boosts welcome)

The fact that Jews are banned from PRIDE is a clear act of discrimination, and that's bolstered by their reasoning.
They argue Jews must denounce Israel and Zionism to be included and that these Jewish organizations haven't done so to the level that satisfies them.
This demand for loyalty pledges and denouncement isn't new. This is what was demanded of Jews in Spain during the inquisition, and more recently in the Soviet Union when Jews were accused of secret loyalty to Israel or a Jewish Cabal.

If you are a Queer non-Jew and you care about inclusivity, you must take this opportunity to stand by your Jewish siblings for their rights. Be an ally.
