#DYK that in 1649 the House of Lords was abolished? Yet, Oliver Cromwell said that the Lords ‘had as true a right to their legislative and jurisdictive power as he had to the coat on his back’. So why were they ultimately abolished? Find out here👇 http://ow.ly/uWiL50L9W55

#OnThisDay in #history in 1718 Poet Laureate Nicholas Rowe died. Born in 1674, Rowe was perhaps the FIRST editor of Shakespeare and published the first known biography of Shakespeare with his edition of the plays (1709).
Rowe also wrote poems and his own plays - one of which caught the zeitgeist of the early Hanoverian period, "Lady Jane Grey" (which I'm writing a chapter on and presenting about!).
He served as Poet Laureate from 1715 to his death.

A treat from Salisbury Cathedral - the cadaver tomb of Thomas Bennett, secretary to Thomas Wolesley. Bennett was deputy to the bishop and later held other roles at the cathedral until his death in 1558. The winding sheet (a form of shroud) lies open but it is still knotted at the feet and head. A skull is placed near his feet - gazing out at spectators as a further reminder of death! #MementoMori #history #histodons #Tudors #tombs #16thcentury
Today I am working here. First opened in 1752,the Biblioteca Marucelliana, Florence, was created to house the library of Francesco Marucelli (1625-1703), as per his will. It's motto: "Maxime Pauperum Utilitati", roughly "Above all for the poor". It is still a free public library @histodons

Oldest-surviving anatomical theatre, located in Padua. Built in 1594.

At the centre is a table on which human and animal dissections took place. Around this table are several tiers with railings, where students or other observers could stand. Over the entrance to the theatre is the Latin inscription: “hic est locus ubi mors gaudet succurrere vitam,” (roughly translated: "this is the place where death delights to help the living.”)

2005: Rupert Murdoch paid $580m for Myspace.
2009: he sold it in $35m.

2008: Bebo was sold for $850m, to AOL. The founders later bought it back for $1m. It was regarded as one of the worst deals ever made in the dot-com era.

2013: Yahoo paid $1.1bn for Tumblr. 2019: they sold it in $3m.

Elon Musk paid $44bn for Twitter. If history has taught us anything it's that this isn't going to end well… when there wasn't a viable business model in the first place.

In the churchyard of St. Pancras Old Church in London, dozens of old gravestones circle an ash tree. Today, this tree is known as the “Hardy Tree,” named after the famous English novelist & poet.

During the 1860s, the Midland Railway Line decided to expand over part of the original churchyard. The architect Arthur Blomfield was commissioned to supervise the exhumation & dismantling of tombs. He passed this unenviable task to his protegé, Thomas Hardy. #histodons #history

In my death historian #introduction you may have spotted a rather striking but bare-looking ring. Sometimes examples are found in rather worn states missing most of their black enamelling - like this ring found in Kent. Here, a skull stares out from between the floral decorations on the hoop (only traces of enamel left) - a reminder of death amidst life. Inscribed for MM who died 24 Nov 1712, aged 82 (Portable Antiquities KENT-574634) #mementomori #archaeology #history #histodons #archaeodons
