#OnThisDay in #history in 1718 Poet Laureate Nicholas Rowe died. Born in 1674, Rowe was perhaps the FIRST editor of Shakespeare and published the first known biography of Shakespeare with his edition of the plays (1709).
Rowe also wrote poems and his own plays - one of which caught the zeitgeist of the early Hanoverian period, "Lady Jane Grey" (which I'm writing a chapter on and presenting about!).
He served as Poet Laureate from 1715 to his death.
