Death and damnation from a series of wooden polychrome sculptures, 'The Four Fates of Man’ by Caspicara. Death is a familiar skeleton with worms. A wreathed skull stares out from this silver medal for Josias Krijger who died 9 September 1675. Krijger was a lieutenant under Rear Admiral Jan Van Brakel. Behind the skull a pair of scythes and also two putti (one extinguishes a torch and the other blows bubbles - a reminder of the fragility of life). A tiny enamelled skull and crossbones on a background of hair in this golden mourning slide. The skull has a heart-shaped nasal cavity. The slide is inscribed for Sir John Kyrle who died 4 January 1679. Slides like this could be worn on a ribbon around the wrist or neck - the ribbon fits through the loops on either side.
