It's been a week now since CachyOS released their latest install media, and in that time I've seen a bit of misinformation going on within the reporting for it.
I've been seeing stuff along the lines of "The latest distro to dump X11", which isn't true. All that's been changed on that front is the install media's live environment has been switched over to Wayland. Once you exit and boot into the newly installed system, the effects of that change are over.
And that's not how it works anyway. The display server, whether Wayland or X11, is determined by the desktop environment not the distribution. It's a common mistake people make because, typically, only a single desktop environment is supported so it's easy to conflate the requirements of one with the other.
This is clearly not the case with CachyOS, which provides the option to install 18 different DEs or window managers. Most are Wayland centric, but X11 entries, like Cinnamon and Xfce, still exist for the time being(some are in the process of converting to Wayland).
Not that this kind of reporting is all that surprising. The Wayland/X11 discussion is one that has long been mined for controversy clicks. Mentioning that some entity is dropping X11 is bound to earn a few extra dollars in ad revenue thanks to the hard-work of polarized tech evangelists.
