We're excited to announce the release of GNOME 44!
Thanks to the hard work of our community of contributors, #GNOME44 brings major improvements to the Settings app, a streamlined Software app, lots of improvements and fixes, and more! https://youtu.be/N7SGe1MiqNA
Some friends and I were discussing why we do free software even though it often means doing tons of work for little or no money.
I think for me some major factors are the personal agency you have over the work (independent from employers/investors) and the potential for longevity that comes with having your work be part of the commons (projects can't be acquired and killed).
That kind of unalienated relationship to your creative output is very rare outside of maybe fine arts or entertainment.
We're excited to share that #GUADEC2023 will take place between July 26-31 in Riga, Latvia!

I am annoyed at how much coverage of these recurring "Big Gorilla lays off around 10.000 people" is basically just a rehash of the company press release, with not a single journalist asking how it's possible that all of these big tech companies made the same exact mistake of hiring too many people, while simultaneously showing record profits.
Like, if a 'rigorous review' finds 12.000 redundancies, why does nobody question leadership about how this was allowed to happen?
Not one critical note.
oh, I guess some of you here might not be aware
Wizards of the Coast (a subsidiary of Hasbro), the owners of D&D, are about to announce a new "Open Gaming License" which completely invalidates the downright "copyleft" license released in the year 2000, with a new one that gives them a financial cut (25%!) of ANY original content you create for their new system, RETROACTIVELY, among many, many other restrictions.
and it seems that Critical Role, etc. are all getting special treatment from WotC.
So here's the problem with certain journalists demanding quote boosts:
1. They already exist on the Fediverse
2. If you want them, you can have them
3. If you demand them from vanilla Mastodon, pay @Gargron
4. If you can't pay @Gargron, fundraise for him
5. With whatever happens, be kind to all Fediverse devs
If I seem salty, it's because you all need to understand that the Fediverse is not Meta or Twitter.
It's a bunch of devs working on their passion projects.
Again, be kind!
