Judge blocks Pentagon order branding Anthropic a national security risk

A federal judge in San Francisco blocked a Pentagon order Thursday labeling the artificial intelligence company Anthropic a national security risk,
saying officials had likely violated the law and retaliated against the firm for speaking publicly about how it wanted its technology to be used.

“Nothing in the governing statute supports the Orwellian notion that an American company may be branded a potential adversary and saboteur of the U.S. for expressing disagreement with the government,”
District Court Judge Rita F. Lin wrote.

The immediate practical implications of the ruling are unclear,
but it represents a clear victory for the AI lab, which has been involved in a bitter power struggle with the Defense Department over the use of its Claude system by the military.

Defense officials pushed the company to allow for the technology to be used for any lawful purpose,
but Anthropic wanted a bar on it being used in mass domestic surveillance and to power fully autonomous weapons.

Anthropic argued that the Trump administration was punishing it for speaking about the risks of its AI technology amid a bitter dispute with the Pentagon.

The great thing about writing a Stainless Steel Rat homage is you get to do things like this (in which our protagonists, having returned from a *very* long trip, have found and are preparing to rob a museum exhibit dedicated to ... themselves): #amwriting
Today, the U.S. Drought Monitor upgraded my town, Corvallis, Oregon, from Abnormally Dry (D0) to Moderate Drought (D1). We have a nasty summer coming, and very likely a bad fire season too. If you live in the West, prepare.

Autocratization in the USA:

"Under Trump’s presidency, the level of democracy in the USA has fallen back to the same level as in 1965."

"Electoral components of democracy, however, remain stable – for now."

NO lightsaber duel or space dogfight in Star Wars will ever go as hard as Stellan Skarsgård going: "I’ve made my mind a sunless space ... I’m condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them ... I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I’ll never see ... So what do I sacrifice? Everything!”

There's a widespread myth that medieval people used spices to cover up the taste of rotten meat.

The whole story traces back to one book. In 1939, a scientist named J.C. Drummond published The Englishman's Food and suggested that medieval recipes were so heavily spiced because the meat was frequently tainted. No evidence. Just an assumption. One sentence in one book published 85 years ago.

I must not scroll. Scroll is the mind-killer. Scroll is the little-death that brings total anxiety. I will deny the phone. I will permit the boredom to pass over me and through me. And when the scroll no longer clouds my mind I will see my path. Only I will remain.
