By day I'm a physicist at a national lab in the US.

I'm generally interested in systems of all types, from interacting particles through economies through systems of law.

At the moment I'm especially interested in studying and engaging with the evolving norms of this distributed system, Mastodon build around ActivityPub.

Spending Sunday liquifying hydrogen in a test of our equipment before the next #experiment.

I sure wish #Mastodon didn't have the character limit so I could explain more about this for anyone who'd be interested :)

Green lines are temperatures of cold surfaces. Blue line is pressure of hydrogen being fed to it. Notably, the blue line dives as the plate temperature hits the vapor-pressure curve and H2 begins liquifying.

#Thermodynamics!

I wish folks on #Mastodon or the #Fediverse in general would stop using  next to their names. I always mix up the platforms I’m currently browsing and keep clicking on it here thinking it’s #Twitter to see whether someone has paid for it or has been legacy verified.. #facepalm

Well, I suppose I could post some #science content to this science instance :)

#StrongForce doesn't seem to be a trending hashtag... yet!

"Although the strong force holds together more than 99% of the visible matter around you, it’s the least understood of the four fundamental forces
"Now, a large collaboration of nuclear physicists tested a less understood facet of the theory of the strong force to get a better understanding of this natural phenomenon."

Two Unprecedented Measurements Offer Insight into the Strong Force | Jefferson Lab

Experimental results a decade in the making will help theorists refine their calculations of the strong force

The post-pandemic slump in ridership and fare revenue has some major transit agencies thinking they can survive without riders' money. They're wrong. https://reason.com/2022/12/22/by-abolishing-fares-big-cities-embrace-transits-death-spiral/
By Abolishing Fares, Big Cities Embrace Transit's Death Spiral

Transit officials and transit-boosting politicians in D.C., L.A., and New York City are warming to the idea of being totally dependent on taxpayer subsidies.

As far as I can tell, and based on the #USHouse report, #IRS mandatory presidential audit is not a legal requirement but rather an executive branch policy.

My hobby horse is that you should never rely on the executive branch to audit itself, as that's a huge and legally unavoidable conflict of interests.

We have independent branches of government so that they will oversee each other without those, and elected legislators drop the ball when they rely on the IRS to audit their boss.

#USPolitics

US politicians are making noise about passing an Electoral Count Act as if such a thing hadn't already been passed... in 1887.

It's worth highlighting that #Mastodon has its filter feature to let people mark hashtags they're not interested in, to keep them out of the Home feed.

It seems especially useful for things like international audiences who'd rather filter out #USPolitics that they're not interested in following.

One of the biggest mistaken assumptions driving panic over algorithms is that exposure to biased content alone produces bias. This notion that ideas, especially political ideas, can be injected directly into consumers through nothing more than media exposure is known as the "hypodermic needle" or “zombie bite” theory of media effects — and it’s been thoroughly debunked https://reason.com/2022/12/07/in-defense-of-algorithms/ #algorithms #socialmedia #media #politics #tech #Twitter #Facebook
The Bipartisan Panic About Social Media Algorithms Is Wrong

They're good for us. They might even be good for democracy.
