“They'll try again. They'll swing back to the belief that they can make people... 'better'.
I do not hold to that”.

Not sure why this dross, dated Dec 1, seems to be circulating now (and why it didn't cross my feed a month ago), but wow what a terrible essay.

The rise of AI denialism

Computer scientist Louis Rosenberg argues that dismissing AI as a “bubble” or mere “slop” ignores the tectonic technological shift now unfolding.

In general, there is a high risk that the law will end up being extremely complex. The risk categories in the Commission's text, in particular, will quickly lead to mandatory maximum-risk mitigation measures (such as scanning and age verification). https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/12/after-years-controversy-eus-chat-control-nears-its-final-hurdle-what-know
After Years of Controversy, the EU’s Chat Control Nears Its Final Hurdle: What to Know

After a years-long battle, the European Commission’s “Chat Control” plan, which would mandate mass scanning and other encryption-breaking measures, at last codifies agreement on a position within the Council of the EU, representing EU States. The good news is that the most controversial part, the forced requirement to scan encrypted messages, is out. The bad news is there’s more to it than that.

One thing I've noticed is missing from most reporting on Australia's social media ban is the risks that come with kids (and adults wanting to avoid age verification) trying to use VPNs to get around the laws. VPN usage has spiked massively in places where similar restrictions are in place, and many free VPN services spy on users way more than their ISP does.

I love VPNs, and I always have mine on, but as someone who used free VPN browser extensions to watch Netflix in different countries when I was a kid, I feel like this ban might trigger a huge cybersecurity and privacy problem beyond the dangers of age verification itself 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, I'm certainly no expert, but there are some good VPN recommendations on @privacyguides that are worth looking at:

An MP is advocating for ICE-style work raids in the UK, enabled by a digital identity app. They are saying the quiet part out loud now. Someone attempted to interrupt them and challenge them on this and the feed was cut.
