Still really like Mastodon but I seem to be having an easier time of committing to Bluesky as a Twitter alternative more than this place sorry. Will still try to post and look here occasionally, but you can also find me at Bluesky at https://bsky.app/profile/brkeogh.bsky.social

Dan Golding, Taylor Hardwick, and myself have throughout this year been working on this research project for Creative Australia to map the size and scope of the Australian game music sector. We did a heap of interviews and a big survey, and discovered a heap of stuff about how composers and musicians are working with game developers across Australia.

We've now published a huge report, that you can download and read for free. It's about Australia, but I imagine will be just as interesting/valuable for understanding how these dynamics work globally, too.

At long last, after literal years of challenges and delays (journal's fault, not the authors'), the SURVIVING WHITENESS IN GAMES special issue of Journal of Games Criticism is now published in full. *14* incredible articles on games and race from a variety of different perspectives.

I also genuinely wonder if large studios now see the years long marketing campaigns for such games as part of the tutorial onboarding? Sometimes I complain about some obtuse AAA game thing on Twitter and I get referred to like a gameplay reveal video from a year before launch where the system is explained.
I would love to read like a design history essay on how Western triple-a got to a point where its games, despite being largely identical over the past 20 years, at the same time became increasingly confusing and unwieldy in terms of UI and UX and tutorials. Like I’m 1.5 hours into Starfield and despite being effectively the same game as Morrowind, the menu system is so confusing to navigate.
I said ‘Starfield’ out loud and was immediately distracted by how much it sounded like ‘Garfield’.
Okay, think I'm definitely committing to Brendan Keogh's Putting Land, a #playdate adaptation of Brendan Keogh's Putting Challenge. Been really enjoying figuring out how to do Playdate #gamedev to get it working. Lots of new things for me to learn like 1-bit pixel art, and just broadly having to do more serious, better disciplined coding since Playdate's SDK doesn't have a GUI. So I'm actually doing Classes and inheritances for the first time, and actually thinking about global and local variables properly for once. Really pumped about how it is going! #screenshotsaturday
